Zantedeschia is also known as calla. Sometimes it is also called Callan

About zantedeschia

This plant belongs to the Aroid family. These plants are very fond of moisture, they are perennial tuberous. Zantedeskia is native to South Africa, where plants grow in humid swampy areas, most often near water bodies. Sometimes even the rhizomes and stems of the plant are completely submerged in water.

The stems of the plant are straight, and the leaves themselves are large, have heart-shaped shapes and long petioles. As for the color of the leaves themselves, they are green or variegated with specks of white or cream color. Depending on the type of plant, the color of the bedspread is either yellow, or white, or pink, purple or cream. There are plants with a bedspread of two colors, also equipped with a transition of shades. Flowering begins in autumn and continues until spring.

Secrets of Zantedeskia Care

Each plant or flower should be cared for in a very special way. At the same time, there are both whimsical plants to care for, and not so much. The secret to the longevity of flowers usually lies precisely in careful and constant care.

Zantedeschia requires good lighting in any season of the year. However, this plant has the unique ability to adapt to a wide variety of conditions. This plant is very fond of heat, while the temperature in the room should not fall below eighteen degrees Celsius. However, the optimal temperature regime is 22-25 degrees. Sudden changes in temperature and drafts are unacceptable for zantedeschia.

This plant needs constant moisture, regular spraying and leaf washing. Of course, the plant can adapt to other conditions, but moisture is a very good indicator for zantedeschia.

Naturally, this plant also needs intensive watering, very abundant from spring to autumn. When the plant does not bloom, then such active watering is not required. It is worth using water aged at room temperature or even warm.

During flowering, this plant needs a specialized fertilizer, which is used for flowering indoor plants. It should be borne in mind that nitrogen fertilization will only lead to the stimulation of more intensive leaf growth.

The drainage should be kept in a pot and the zantedeschia should be replanted every year to avoid excessive depletion of the soil. Depending on the size of the tuber, it should be immersed to a depth of at least five centimeters.

This plant begins to bloom at the age of two years. Sometimes the first bloom is rather pale, even greenish, however, over the years, the color becomes more saturated and bright. Adequate lighting promotes the blooming of ztedeschia from late autumn to late winter. After the plant reaches two to three years of age, it must be transplanted.

After flowering, the plant should be allowed to rest. However, do not forget that in case of insufficient lighting, flowering can only begin in spring. The same applies to low temperature conditions. In the middle of summer, the plant should be cleaned of the remnants of leaves, dried in the air and then transplanted into a new substrate. The rest period should be observed for one and a half months. New leaves will begin to grow in the fall.

In real conditions, this plant's dormant period is summer, hot and dry. At home, such a period can literally come at any time, it all depends on the lighting and the level of watering intensity.

As for reproduction, it occurs through the division of the rhizome. After the dormant period is over, the side shoots should be separated from the mother plant and planted separately in pots. Wide and low products should be chosen as such pots.

This plant can get sick with spider mites. In order to avoid this circumstance, a fairly periodic spraying with water is necessary. However, this should be done not only as a preventive measure against diseases, but also for the normal development of the plant itself. This plant seems to be quite unpretentious to care for, but in fact, a lot depends on the care itself. Subject to competent and proper care, zantedeschia will answer you with its beautiful flowering, which will perfectly complement the interior of any room.
