Zantedeschia (lat. Zantedeschia) - a flowering plant from the Aroid family. The second name is calla.

Description

Zantedeschia is a herbaceous perennial equipped with bizarre tuberous rhizomes. From the upper part of these rhizomes, large heart-spear-shaped leaves sitting on long fleshy cuttings extend. The height of the flower stalks of Zantedeschia is in the range from forty to one hundred and thirty centimeters, and on each peduncle there is a spectacular inflorescence-cob formed by a great many nondescript flowers that can boast of the finest vanilla aroma.

All inflorescences are wrapped in large cover sheets, the color of which, depending on the variety and type, can be arbitrarily diverse - white, burgundy, orange, yellow, etc. In most cases, these covers are monochromatic, but sometimes there are specimens with a color transition from one to the other. By the way, it is these covering sheets that give the plant as a whole a special decorative effect! In this case, the duration of flowering of one inflorescence can be from a month to one and a half months!

Where grows

Most often, Zantedeschia can be seen in Africa, from Nigeria to Tanzania. However, in South Africa, this plant is also not uncommon.

Usage

Zantedeschia is an excellent material for a wide variety of floristic arrangements. These amazing flowers will be the perfect gift for confident and elegant women, in addition, their sophisticated beauty can be a stunning finishing touch to a stylish design of a living room or bedroom. And for growing in greenhouses, this amazing plant is also ideal!

Zantedeschia is perfectly preserved in water, before placing in which it is recommended to cut its stems at an acute angle. It is also important not to forget that specimens of Zantedeschia cut at the bud stage will no longer bloom. It is also quite acceptable to use this plant for a very short period of time and in various compositions without water, while in order for it to stand as long as possible, it is recommended to cover the ends of its stems with wax, having previously "drunk" the zantedeschia in the "Krizal" solution.

All plants from this genus are poisonous, and this fact, too, should not be discounted in any case. Without exception, all parts of Zantedeschia are poisonous, and this is due to the content of calcium oxalate in it. If the juice of this plant gets on the mucous membranes, the person will immediately experience irritation and pain, and if it gets into the mouth, swelling of the mouth, tongue and throat will not take long. In case of contact with the skin, the juice of zantedeschia often causes contact dermatitis. Also, when poisoned with this plant, unpleasant symptoms such as convulsions, heart palpitations, diarrhea, salivation, vomiting and nausea may appear. At the same time, even despite all the troubles described above, people eat the leaves of some varieties of Zantedeschia.

Growing and caring

Zantedeschia will grow with equal success both in areas well-lit by the sun and in partial shade. And this beauty feels best of all on slightly acidic soils! In summer, this plant needs regular watering, and with the onset of autumn, watering should be moderate. Also, throughout the growing season, zantedeschia must be pampered with dressings, dissolving ten grams of high-quality complex fertilizer in a bucket of water.

Reproduction of Zantedeschia is carried out mainly vegetatively, by dividing its bushes, however, seed reproduction of this beauty is also quite possible.
