In previous articles, we looked at when and how to cover roses, got acquainted with all methods of pruning roses. But there is one more, in my opinion, an important question: tools for caring for roses. What tools are needed? What to look for when buying them?

The first is gloves. But ordinary garden gloves will not work for us, as the thorns of rose bushes will easily pass through them and you will get hurt or, even worse, drive a splinter. Therefore, you need to purchase special tight gloves with a rubberized front part.

By the way, some suggest replacing them with dense electrician leggings: the roses will not be pierced, and the gloves themselves are high, they can completely protect the hands. But in this case, the replacement will not work. Yes, there are undoubtedly the above-described advantages, but there is also a significant disadvantage - these gloves are very tough, it will be difficult, almost impossible, to work with roses and other plants in them. Therefore, we purchase specifically special gloves for pruning roses or any other gloves similar in quality to them.

The second is a shovel. It is an essential tool for digging and covering rose bushes. The most common bayonet shovel will do. What to look for when purchasing it? First, the shape of the blade. A shovel with a rectangular blade is only suitable for pre-dug areas, but a shovel with a rounded blade is suitable for working on hard soil. Secondly, on the material from which the blade is made. Currently, shovels are made from aluminum, titanium, steel and stainless steel. Aluminum does not suit unambiguously, as the metal is too soft.

A titanium shovel has a number of advantages and advantages: it is lightweight, durable, and less earth sticks to it. But with all its advantages, it is not cheap, so before buying, think about whether you really need it?

The optimum material is stainless steel. It is moderately dense, strong, it does not need to be sharpened. There is one drawback: you cannot apply too much load, the blade may bend.

The third is the most common garden pruner. It will be needed for pruning shoots, as well as for removing thin branches and faded flowers. It is also convenient for them to do easy, literally 1-2 buds, pruning.

What to look for when buying? The most important thing is that the pruning shears should be "on the hand". That is, the handles of the pruner should fit comfortably in the hand, the handles did not slip during operation, the retainer was in easy access, and it is also important that the brush does not get tired quickly when working with the pruner. Therefore, before buying, "click" the pruner.

Also, inspect the blade. It should not be too thin, otherwise it may center when working with thick pink branches.

The fourth is a pruner with long handles. To be honest, this is my favorite instrument. Easily copes with branches of any thickness (with the exception of very thick old pink branches), hands are far from thorny branches, cuts easily and quickly.

What should you pay attention to? For the thickness of the cutting blades, they should be thick enough for the comfort of the handles so that they do not slip in the hands. Some models have a material such as foam rubber on the handles, a little denser. The hands, of course, are comfortable and soft, but the thorns easily cling to this material, so preference should be given to a pruner with plastic overlays on the handles.

And the last is a small folding file. We will use it when pruning the thickest pink branches.

What to look for when buying?

First of all, the height and shape of the cutting teeth. The overlapping arrangement of the teeth will greatly facilitate your work. It is advisable that the saw has an anti-corrosion treatment to avoid rusting. In addition, pay attention to the special non-slip pads, they should help to hold the saw comfortably and not allow it to slip. And the last thing - look at the saw opening mechanism (button) and check its operation, the saw should open smoothly, and not tilt back like a knife.

That's it, we've covered all the basic rose care tools. Beautiful rose gardens to you!
