If your rocky hill is not yet decorated with an unpretentious and winter-hardy mouse hyacinth, then now is the time to plant its bulbs in the soil. By planting it this fall, you will free yourself from worries for five to six years, than fill the void of the slide. Its blue-eyed racemose inflorescences revive gray stones, and cut flower stalks up to twenty centimeters high will harmoniously fit into a small spectacular bouquet in early spring
What's in your name
Muscari owes its name to the smell exuded by purple, light blue, less often white, dense inflorescences. Their tart scent is reminiscent of the musk used by the perfume industry to produce a long-lasting, harsh perfume for men.
And they were nicknamed "mouse hyacinth" for their small stature and similarity in appearance with real hyacinths.
It is also called the "viper bow". Perhaps vipers like to feast on them.
Habit
Low-growing muscari rarely reach a height of 30 centimeters, more often it is a height of 10-20 centimeters. First, the plant raises its linear, narrow leaves from the soil, and then releases a leafless peduncle, ending in racemose dense inflorescences of tiny bells.
A small variety of colors pays off for the brightness and richness of color and aroma emitted by some species.
Blue clusters of inflorescences adorn the flower garden for 10 days in April-May, without fear of spring frosts.
Plant species
• Muscari Armenian - this species is most often found in our dachas. Its blue bells with a white border fill the flower garden in May. Up to 50 pieces of tiny flowers fit in one cluster of inflorescences, located on a 15-20 centimeter peduncle. Differs in high frost resistance, wintering without special shelter. This species has different varieties. So, the Blue Spike variety is distinguished by pale blue fragrant bells, of which there are up to 170 pieces in the inflorescence, and the Seffier variety is dark blue with a white border, which look very impressive against the background of bright tulips or daffodils and bloom for a long period.
• Muscari vine-shaped - has a variety with white flowers, but more often it is blue with a purple tint and white teeth. The clusters of its inflorescences are narrower and smaller than those of the Armenian muscari. Blooms for two to three weeks in early May.
• Muscari crested - so named for the crest at the top of the multi-flowered raceme, formed by a bunch of bright bluish-purple flowers. Blooms in June. Looks great on lawns, in flower beds with perennials against the background of plants with large gray leaves.
• Muscari broadleaf - its leaves are similar to those of tulips, flowers are dark purple. It blooms for three weeks in mid-spring.
Growing conditions
Being a spring flower, muscari love sunny places, but they will not be upset if you give them a place in partial shade or shade. They can easily decorate the trunks of deciduous trees, which, during the flowering of the plant, are still preparing to release their young sticky leaves.
He prefers loose and well-drained soils, but is not too capricious and can grow on others. The main thing is that there is no stagnation of water under the roots. Under favorable conditions, it grows without transplants for 3-4 years.
Reproduction
The flower propagates by seeds and bulbs. The seeds do not require human participation, scattering on their own. The same can be said about the bulbs, which grow the larger, the better their living conditions, that is, the soil is looser, there is enough light, there is no stagnant water.
A heavily overgrown bush can be divided by digging out the bulbs. Now is the right time for that. You should not keep the dug out bulbs out of the soil, but it is better to immediately plant them in a place prepared for this. Preparation consists in digging up the earth with the addition of compost to it. Lower the bulbs to a depth of 7 centimeters, leaving 6-10 centimeters between the bulbs. Planting in small groups for the beauty of flowering.
