Ornamental grasses and cereals

Ornamental grasses and grasses have been integral elements of modern landscape design for many years. During the gardening season, ornamental plants add zest to the overall composition of the garden, preserving their beauty until severe frosts. Ornamental grasses and cereals can create coziness and a special atmosphere at the summer cottage. They are not whimsical, they can withstand the piercing wind and harsh weather without any problems. Herbs go well with flower crops, shrubs and conifers

The main advantage of this group of plants is considered to be simple agricultural technology, it is important to know only the biological characteristics of each variety. Herbs and grains grown in gardens add texture, volume and focus to a space. They look good on rustic plots, rockeries, alpine slides, artificial and natural ponds, and gravel gardens. Freshly cut or dried ornamental herbs add charm to bouquets and compositions made from dried flowers.

Currently, Russian producers offer a huge selection of this kind of plants. The most popular are miscanthus, cortaderia, canary grass, feather grass and fescue. These plants are spectacular, expressive, they are appreciated by gardeners and designers for their architectural qualities.

Micanthus - a rather tall cereal plant, characterized by long linear leaves and drooping panicles of feathery spikelets of silvery, golden or pinkish shades. Among Russian gardeners, the most common miscanthus is Chinese, often called reeds, as well as sugar-flowered miscanthus and reddish miscanthus. Most of the varieties of this plant have a longitudinal stripe or cream-colored specks on the leaves. With proper care, miscanthus grow up to 2-2.5 m. The plant is especially demanding for sunlight and good soil permeability, they treat moisture positively, they tolerate frosts calmly.

Feather grass - perennial ornamental grass. The plant was especially popular in 2007, but today it has not lost its relevance. Many gardeners use feather grass in their gardens and flower gardens. The plant has dense cushions of greenery with curved or straight stems and panicle inflorescences in the form of a brush. In Russia, feather grass and reed feather grass are widely used. In general, the plant is cold-resistant and unassuming, but requires good light and structural soil. Feather grass is used to create rockeries, gravel gardens, mixborders, etc.

Cortaderia (or pampas grass) - an ornamental plant, reaching a height of 3 m. The plant has curving or straight stems, on which, as it grows, long and fluffy ears of inflorescences are formed. Cortaderia is planted in mixborders, in open spaces and behind low-growing plants and grasses.

Pennisetum - ornamental cereal, often called fountain grass or pinnate. Pennisetum is a plant up to 1.5 m high, with elongated fluffy spikelets resembling brushes. The cereal grows quickly enough, fits perfectly into flower beds. In Russia, the Chinese pennisetum or tail-shaped is very popular, the variety has an attractive inflorescence color. The shaggy pennisetum is relevant among gardeners, characterized by light inflorescences, which over time acquire a burgundy hue; oriental pennisetum, pleasing to the eye with compact forms; pennisetum bristly, with unusual curved stems, forming the shape of a fountain. The splendor of the garden plot can be given by the gray pennisetum, the variety was first introduced only in 2005. This type of pennisetum is distinguished by stems, leaves and ears of purple color, sometimes with a black tint. Gray pennisetum is grown in the northern regions of Russia, Siberia and the Urals only through seedlings. The rest of the plant varieties are frost-resistant, but require shelter for the winter.

Veinik - an ornamental cereal plant, reaching a height of up to 1.5 m. Consists of thin stems, curved linear leaves, hemispherical turf and fluffy panicles of silvery-pink color. The reed is frost-resistant, shade-tolerant and unpretentious to the soil composition. Looks great in flower beds and single plantings.

Siberian pearl barley (or high) - an ornamental grass with erect stems, bright green leaves and purple panicle inflorescences in the form of a brush. Pearl barley is not picky about soils, although it prefers fertile and moist soils with good water permeability.

Plants reach 1-1.5 m in height, blooms mainly in summer, panicles can be golden or bronze in color. The meadow is frost-hardy, shade-tolerant, prefers slightly acidic or neutral soils.
