Hydrangea petiolar, or curly (lat. Hydrangea petiolaris) - perennial vine; species of the genus Hortensia of the Hortensia family. It is found in the wild on the Kuril Islands, in the southern regions of Sakhalin, as well as in Japan, China and Korea. It grows mainly along the coast, in thin and dense forests. In nature, it reaches a length of 20-25 m.
Characteristics of culture
Stalked hydrangea, or curly, is a slowly growing liana that clings to a support with the help of air roots and suckers and rises to a height of 15 m (in culture). It can act as a creeping ground plant, in this case the length does not exceed 2-3 m. The leaves are dark green, shiny, wide, ovate, with a heart-shaped base, sitting on long petioles. The flowers are white-green, lilac or pinkish, fragrant, collected in loose corymbose inflorescences, reaching a diameter of 15-25 cm.
The species in question blooms in June, the fruits ripen only when grown in southern regions with warm autumn. Petiole hydrangea is frost-resistant, suitable for growing in central Russia, does not need shelter for the winter. In severe winters, vines can freeze slightly, but in spring they quickly recover and often bloom in the same year. A rare species, but very decorative. It is rarely used in Russian gardens. Easily propagated by layering and cuttings, both methods give 100% results.
Growing features
Like other representatives of the genus, petiolate hydrangea is demanding on soil fertility and location. The soils are preferable loamy, moderately moist, loose, air and water permeable, with a slightly acidic pH reaction. Calcareous substrates for culture are contraindicated. The species in question is photophilous, but not tolerant of direct sunlight, so it is advisable to plant the plants in weakly shaded areas with diffused light. Stalked hydrangea is hygrophilous; during a long absence of rain, it needs frequent watering. Lack of moisture can affect development and wintering.
To obtain good growth, rich foliage and abundant flowering, plants require systematic fertilizing with mineral and organic fertilizers. The first is carried out in early spring, the second before flowering. Autumn feeding is not prohibited. The main goal when using vines in the garden is to achieve the maximum decorative effect through active branching, which can be achieved through pruning.
When using petiolate hydrangea for vertical gardening, vines need strong support. It should be remembered that wooden structures and especially wooden walls of houses are not suitable, since over time the plant will turn into a heavy green mass, under which the tree will rot. If hydrangea is used as a soil crop, it does not need time, it is fixed by adventitious roots on the soil surface.
Every year, vines must be subjected to sanitary pruning, which consists in removing damaged, dead and diseased growths. To ensure maximum coverage of the support, powerful growths are pruned, followed by tying up the stems and shortening the shoots growing from them. This procedure stimulates the formation of new lateral shoots, which is especially important for making vines decorative.
Use in the garden
As mentioned above, petiolate hydrangea is used to decorate walls, balconies, gazebos, arches and fences. During flowering, vines create a festive and cozy atmosphere at the same time. Plants are able to maintain a beautiful appearance from early spring to late autumn. They can easily transform shabby verandas and other small architectural structures. Thanks to the petiole hydrangea, it is possible to divide the garden area into zones.

How To Recognize Hydrangea Diseases?
The beautiful hydrangea has taken root in our gardens. However, it is also impossible to completely exclude the possibility of infection. Miniature Stalked Cabbage Gnat
The stalked cabbage mosquito is a rather interesting and very small pest. Its voracious larvae very much harm cruciferous crops - the leaves attacked by them become corrugated and quickly shrivel, and the leaf petioles noticeably bend and thicken near the bases. The apical buds of plants in most cases die off, and instead of them from the axillary buds, sometimes several tiny "coots" are formed. If, on top of that, warm and humid weather sets in, then
