In August, it is a little sad to realize that the warm season is drawing to a close, and the beds in the garden are emptying. However, in the last summer month it is still possible to sow crops with a short growing season. The most suitable vegetable for this purpose is radish. Having completed the sowing in August, gardeners will still have time to harvest a full crop of turnips in September-October and extend the period for fresh vegetables on the dinner table
Features of growing radishes
The short ripening period of the radish makes it possible to harvest several harvests of this vegetable per season. However, experienced gardeners rarely grow it as a catch crop, preferring to sow radish as a precursor crop in early spring or as a stubble crop closer to fall. Why isn't this vegetable grown in the middle of summer?
The fact is that radishes have their own preferences for lighting and air temperature requirements. It develops best when outside the window the thermometer shows values within + 14 … + 18 ° С. When the weather is hot outside, there is a drought for a long time, the taste of the radish deteriorates noticeably. Under such conditions, it is not possible to get a good harvest of juicy, moderately pungent turnips. The root vegetable becomes too bitter, and the turnip itself becomes coarse.
It is known that radishes are photophilous. If sowing is carried out in an area located in the shade, then the plant will respond with an elongated tops and the absence of a round root crop. At the same time, in the summer months with long daylight hours, radishes are rapidly shooting down. Therefore, at the beginning of summer, spring crops are harvested, and from June to July, radish crops are temporarily stopped, releasing the vacated beds for crops that are more flexible to hot summer conditions. And the next sowing is planned only for August.
Soil preparation
Radish is picky about the composition of the soil. He needs a fertile soil rich in humus and nutrients. For this, the beds are filled with mineral fertilizers:
• ammonium nitrate;
• potassium salt;
• superphosphate.
The amount of fertilizers is 30 g per 1 sq. M. area. It is not recommended to plant radishes over freshly removed manure. In such areas, it is sown after the previous culture. Rotted peat compost is also used from organic fertilizers.
You can grow radishes after potatoes, tomatoes, peas. It is undesirable to place radish after daikon, cabbage, turnip, as well as, in fact, the radish itself.
Radish care
For 1 sq. area will need no more than 10 g of radish seeds. But taking less than 7 g of seed is no longer desirable. And this amount will have to be thinned out when the seedlings sprout up densely. Thickened plantings of plants are strongly stretched. Therefore, as soon as one true leaf is formed on the seedlings, the extra ones are pulled out so that a distance of about 5-7 cm is formed between the shoots. After thinning, they are fed with ammonium nitrate.
It is necessary to monitor the state of soil moisture. If the soil is dry, the roots become coarse and taste bitter. If the personal plot is located near a country house, and the beds are visited infrequently, you cannot immediately water the plants too abundantly after a long break. Such an oversight will lead to cracking of the root crops.
Young plants are always more vulnerable to pests striving to feast on their juicy delicate greens. At this time, planting radishes should be protected from cruciferous fleas, cabbage whites, aphids and other parasites that like the cruciferous family. Remember that more often pests settle where weeds have sprouted next to cultivated plants. Therefore, the beds must be regularly cleaned of weeds.

Radishes Can Be Grown On A Windowsill
In the cold season, radishes are grown both for root crops and for vitamin tops, rich in vitamin C, carotene and other useful and necessary conditions for poor fresh greens in winter. It is somewhat more difficult to get root crops in indoor conditions, but if you know some of the features of growing this crop, the task no longer seems so impossible
Growing Early Spring Radishes
In the earliest spring, among the first vegetables in the markets, along the roads and highways, you can see the sellers of the first greens and the invariable early radish, bright, juicy. Such radish is always in demand among the townspeople. And summer residents who have at least a small piece of their own land are well aware of this and therefore in a hurry to sell the first crop from their beds. Meanwhile, growing early spring radish is not difficult even for a not very experienced person in agriculture. After all
How To Store Radishes Correctly
Radish is a very popular crop: it grows quite quickly and well, and not only root crops, but also leaves are edible. In addition, radishes are very useful - they are rich in coarse fibers that are not digested by the intestines and, swelling, remove carcinogens, cholesterol and toxins from it. As soon as the radish crop is harvested, the issue of its storage immediately becomes relevant. And you can save crispy root vegetables in different ways, and each of them is good in its own way
Problems With Growing Radishes
Problems in growing radish - radish is certainly one of the most common crops in summer cottages. Actually, growing radishes will not be difficult, however, it is for this reason that many gardeners do not pay enough attention to the proper care of radishes. For this reason, many do not get the proper level of harvest. It is very important to properly prepare the soil, select seeds and create the necessary conditions for the radish. We will talk about the proper care of radishes in this hundred
August: Sowing, Feeding And Harvesting
In August, it is not yet time to relax for those gardeners who want to use their weaving to the maximum. Somewhere the harvest is just ripening, and some vegetables still need fertilizers and other attention from the owner. At the same time, the plots vacated after early vegetables can be re-occupied with crops
