In the cold season, radishes are grown both for root crops and for vitamin tops, rich in vitamin C, carotene and other useful and necessary conditions for poor fresh greens in winter. It is somewhat more difficult to get root crops in indoor conditions, but if you know some of the features of growing this crop, the task no longer seems so impossible

Conditions for successful cultivation of radishes

Both when grown in the open field and in indoor beds, an important condition for obtaining radish root crops is a short daylight hours. If the length of the day exceeds more than 10 hours, the plant begins to shoot. And in order to get a good dense root vegetable with a delicate taste, it is better that this time does not exceed 8 hours. And this is exactly the condition that is not at all difficult to fulfill in the winter months.

Another important criterion is the temperature regime. Tying of the root crop occurs at a value from +12 to + 15 ° C. And for its formation it is necessary that the thermometer column does not go beyond + 16 … + 20 ° С. When it gets warmer, the root crops may not be harvested, or they will become fibrous and too bitter. The same effect can be expected with a thickened crop and moisture deficit.

Container and soil for sowing radish indoors

For the arrangement of beds for radishes, you will need a deep container - about 25-30 cm high. Boxes, bags, troughs can be adapted for these purposes. The soil structure should be light. This is easy to achieve by adding sand and organic fertilizers to the growing substrate - compost, humus, peat. But it is also impossible to overdo it with such fertilizers - an excess of organic matter leads to deformation of the root crop or its absence at all, since the plant, because of this, directs its resources to the development of greenery.

Features of sowing radish

A point that is not always paid attention to is a competent choice of a variety for growing indoors. The right decision would be to stop at early varieties so that the roots are formed in three to four weeks.

For sowing, containers are filled with soil mixture and shallow grooves are made on the surface of the substrate. They can be pushed through with a knife or a ruler. The row spacing is left at least 5 cm wide. The seeds are placed at a distance of approximately 5-6 cm from each other. Then the seeds sown in the grooves are sprinkled with the same nutritious substrate through a sieve. After that, watering is carried out.

One of the advantages of radish is its high germination rate. Therefore, unlike growing seedlings of other crops, boxes with crops of these vegetables are immediately placed in a well-lit place. If you make a mistake and leave them in the dark, the seedlings quickly stretch out.

You should refrain from installing containers on the windowsill, under which heating radiators are located. This creates excessive dryness of the air, not to mention an unfavorable temperature regime.

Indoor radish care

Crop maintenance is very simple. Care must be taken to ensure that the plantings are not thickened. And if the seeds have not failed and most of them have sprouted, it is necessary to thin out the beds. It is better to get rid of a few plants than to lose the entire future crop.

Watering is moderate, but does not allow the soil to dry out. The water should be at room temperature. It is useful to loosen and add some dry soil after watering. This will save moisture from rapid evaporation, as well as the formation of a crust on the soil surface.

If fertilizers have failed and the plants develop poorly, additional feeding is carried out. For this, urea is used per 1 liter of water - 4 g, potassium sulfate - 2 g, superphosphate - 2 g.

Overexposing vegetables in the garden is not worth it. It is tempting to surprise relatives with a large root vegetable, but then there is a risk that then the radish will become coarser.
