Breeding methods for asparagus

A perennial can be propagated in several ways. They practice growing bushes by transplanting parts of rhizomes. They also sow seeds for seedlings. This can be done right in the open field, setting aside a small piece of land in your garden for a nursery. Here, the bed should be filled with high quality humus. Rotted manure is also suitable.

Sowing asparagus seeds for seedlings is carried out in the third decade of May. But you need to prepare for work in advance in order to have time to complete the pre-sowing preparation of seeds. For this, the seeds are soaked for germination for 3-4 days. They are placed on damp gauze and placed on a saucer, after which they are kept at a temperature of + 23 … + 25 ° C. Those specimens that have begun to peck are immediately used for sowing. This is done according to the 10x15 cm scheme.

When the asparagus is placed in one row, a width of 100 cm is sufficient. For two rows of perennials, a planting width of 150 cm is taken.

While the seedlings are growing, you should prepare and fill the area under the asparagus with fertilizers. To do this, take about 15 kg of manure per 1 square meter. area. Before planting seedlings in a permanent place, they dig a groove about 40 cm wide and deep here. The bottom must be loosened well. The resulting furrow is half filled with rotted manure. The remaining volume is filled with humus. To save organic matter, instead of grooves, planting pits with a diameter of about 40 cm can be arranged. The distance between the plants is made in a row of about 35 cm. When planting is carried out in two rows, the row spacing is made about 70 cm.

The seedlings should be placed in the grooves so that the apical buds are 20 cm below ground level. After transplanting plants, you need to water the beds. Caring for asparagus is simple, it consists in regular loosening of the soil and watering, as well as cleaning the plantings from weeds. If the transplant was carried out in the spring, in the fall, the aboveground part of the plants is cut off at a height of 10 cm from the soil. Yellowing of the leaves serves as a signal for such work. After that, the planting is covered with humus. And they start harvesting shoots already in the third year after planting a perennial. Asparagus can be grown in one place for about 10-12 years.
