Phlox Drummond - for one summer

Phlox Drummond refers to perennial plants, but in horticultural floriculture it is cultivated as an annual. This is one of the most popular varieties of phlox in the gardens of amateur flower growers. Drummond phlox bushes branch beautifully, and varieties have a wide range of petal colors. Moreover, they have a very pleasant aroma.

The height of plants is from 20 to 60 cm. They are used in landscape design for various purposes. Those that are lower are very well suited for decorating a rabatka, the lower tier in a mixborder, they can be used as an ornamental curb plant, they even decorate balconies. Medium-sized representatives of Drummond phlox are planted in the background or background of wall flower beds, they can be used to decorate the center of a round flower garden. These plants bloom profusely and for a long time. They are also grown for cutting.

Phlox Drummond prefers warm weather, does not die at high summer temperatures, and it is also light-loving. In the middle lane, it is not left to winter in the open field. The optimal conditions for it to survive the winter months are in a climate close to the subtropics.

This variety is recommended to grow on such types of soil as loam or sandy loam. The soil should be rich in humus, well-drained - phlox does not tolerate stagnant water. It can be propagated both by sowing seeds and by cuttings. Sowing in the ground begins in April. When the fourth pair of leaves develops, the seedlings must be remembered to pinch.

Cuttings are carried out in the summer. The cuttings should be about 7 cm long and have at least two knots. The bottom cut is made just below the knot. The lower leaves are cut completely, and the upper ones are shortened by half. Rooted in a nutritious soil mixture.

Perennial varieties of phlox

Lovers of perennial flowers can be advised of the following varieties of phlox that hibernate in the open field:

• phlox Arends;

• paniculate;

• adorable;

• subulate;

• spread out.

The flowering period of phlox paniculata falls on the second half of summer. These are medium and tall plants. Their erect bushes reach a height of 50 cm to 1.5 m. Flowers are from 1.5 to 5 cm in diameter and are collected in luxurious paniculate inflorescences. Such a fragrant beauty will adorn the flower garden from about mid-July until the arrival of frost. The flower is not only frost-hardy, but also shade-tolerant. But it is not very suitable for cutting - the petals fade quickly.

A perennial can be propagated by cuttings, dividing the bush, and also by root suckers. These procedures are started in the spring, and the division of the bush can be done after the end of the flowering period. Cuttings are harvested when phloxes reach a height of 8-10 cm. Planting is carried out in a shady corner of the garden or in free areas of cold greenhouses.

Phlox Arends is similar to paniculata, but it is much lower - about 30 cm. And its flowering period begins earlier: in late spring - early summer. Flowering usually stops by mid-July. One of the advantages of this variety is that it winters well outdoors and in regions with mild winters may not even need shelter.

Another low variety of phlox is spread out. The stems are only 20-30 cm long. But they bloom thickly. Loose spherical inflorescences form a whole cap of fragrant blue and lilac stars. It can also remain uncovered during the winter months. But when the cold season will be frosty and little snow, it is better to arrange them with a blanket of fallen leaves.
