Lovers of indoor floriculture, such an exotic as hippeastrum, captivates at first sight. It's hard not to fall in love with this deliciously vibrant houseplant. Its powerful slender stems are crowned with magnificent large flowers of impressive size - up to 25 cm in diameter. This is a perennial plant, and so that it continues to delight every year with new buds, from September to November, a dormant period is arranged for it
Caring for the hippeastrum during the rest period
If the handsome hippeastrum first appeared in your house in the summer, then you already know that he is a big lover of moisture, and they water him abundantly. However, this rule does not apply to the rest period. At this time, it is necessary to moisturize the substrate under the plant very moderately. For this, watering is performed from the pallet, and only 2-3 times during the entire dormant period. It is important that the roots of the plant do not dry out, and the aerial part will dry in different ways, depending on what type of hippeastrum you are growing. There are varieties in which the leaves die off for the winter, and other representatives of these plants retain their greenery even in the cold season.
If you get a flower that sheds leaves, as they dry out, they should be carefully separated from the plant and removed from the pot. When your beauties retain their green aboveground part for the winter, during the rest period it should be left in a sufficiently illuminated place.
Features of the peduncles of the hippeastrum
Towards the end of autumn, the onion pots should be installed in a very warm room, next to the stove or radiator. It is necessary that the air temperature in this place be about + 30 ° C and higher. From this moment on, the flower is no longer watered until the bulb throws out a new peduncle. As soon as it reaches a length of at least 5 cm, the soil under the flower is moderately moistened with water at room temperature for several days. Then the pot is moved to a windowsill or stand as close to the window as possible. Gradually, as the flower arrow grows, the amount of watering is increased - until the very moment the buds appear.
If the arrow has not appeared by December, the pot is left warm. You should not rush to watering. If you hurry with this, instead of a peduncle, leaves will grow, and the arrow will be delayed in development. However, it should be remembered that in some varieties the arrow grows only with the arrival of the flowering period - you need to know about this feature of your hippeastrum in advance so as not to make a mistake in caring for the plant.
Necessary measures before and after flowering
As soon as the peduncle reaches a length of at least 12 cm, the substrate will need to be treated with a light pink solution of potassium permanganate. After another 5-6 days, phosphorus fertilizers are applied to the soil under the flower. If everything was done correctly and on time, then under favorable conditions flowering occurs about a month after the peduncle was noticed.
During summer, hippeastrum can be kept in the garden under the sun. A pot with a flower is buried in the soil. The container is not completely hidden underground, the edges should protrude slightly.
Flowering hippeastrum lasts a month and a half. After that, the bulbs are transferred to fresh pots or the old ones are disinfected. To do this, it is enough to pour boiling water over them. The structural features of the bulb also require a special shape of the pot. It should be narrow but tall. When planted, the bulbs are visible about two-thirds above the surface of the substrate. However, since its roots are very long, and they require space and depth.
During transplantation, the old soil must be shaken off the roots and their condition should be inspected. If necessary, sanitary pruning is carried out - rotted and broken specimens are removed. In addition, ripe bulb babies can be removed during transplantation. They give themselves away by having roots. Such babies are first placed in common nursery containers, and then transplanted into separate pots.
