Why do some gardeners, seedlings get strong, healthy-looking, have a beautiful rich color of stems and leaves, while others - stretch out, turn pale, droop after transplantation? This is due not only to the growing process, but to whether the owners of the backyard plots do not neglect the hardening of seedlings and whether they can move plants from the pots to their beds as gently as possible
Why are the seedlings hardened
In order for the sown seeds to sprout, we arrange cozy greenhouse conditions for our wards. In the future, the seedlings develop and grow stronger completely under the tutelage of the gardener: we supplement our pets, while shading their delicate leaves from direct sunlight, protecting them from drafts and taking care of maintaining a certain microclimate. Not surprisingly, plants are stressed after transplanting outdoors. After such greenhouse conditions, protected by window glass from the external unpredictable world, the seedlings become pampered.
In order for any adversity and vagaries of the weather to be transplanted seedlings at all, it is necessary to take measures to harden the plants. To do this, a week and a half before planting on the beds, the seedlings in the greenhouses are aired longer than usual, eventually leaving it open even overnight. Those garden crops that were sown indoors are taken out into the street. Such walks also begin dosed, gradually prolonging sunbathing. In addition, the watering of the plants is slightly reduced.
With this approach, the resistance of seedlings to a drop and fluctuations in temperature in the open air is increased. It will become more hardy in conditions of lack of moisture and drying out by the wind. Seasoned seedlings have a more squat appearance. It has elastic leaves of a rich color. Some varieties, after hardening, acquire a waxy coating on the sheet plate. For example, this feature is typical for cabbage.
Features of planting seedlings in the garden
Who among us doesn't like clear, sunny days? But in such weather, instead of planting seedlings in the garden, it is better to go for a walk or do other things. Cloudy days are more suitable for plants for planting. Strong heat and bright sun are not the best companions for pets to take root in the garden. But when the deadlines are tight, and it is no longer possible to drag out the work any longer, then schedule these works in the early morning or late afternoon.
When planting is carried out in the morning, it must be borne in mind that a few hours before the procedure, abundant watering should be carried out. This will prevent severe injury to the root system during transplantation, and the earthen ball will hold on better. If, when removed from the greenhouse, the roots are bare, it's okay. Another trick that helps the seedling take off better is dipping the roots in a clay mash.
Those who grew their seedlings in cups and pots do not need to shake the plants off the ground. You need to try to carefully remove the whole earthen lump and, in this form, place the plant in the hole. In this regard, such a task is much easier given to gardeners who originally planted their pets in peat pots and earthen cubes - the seedlings are planted in the beds with them.
Usually, seedlings are placed in holes at a slightly deeper depth than they grew in cups and nurseries. But there are exceptions to this rule. They relate to those crops that have a shorter natural part. For example, these include celery, lettuce, rutabaga. They do not need to be buried too deep. And the seedlings of onion crops are planted altogether so that only the lobe of the roots is in the soil.
