Clematis is a great decoration for any garden and any suburban area. These are perennial liana-like climbing plants, dense thickets of which form a whole waterfall of large bright flowers of various shapes and shades. White and pink, raspberry and blue, light blue, lilac, carmine, one-color and two-color, simple and double - for every taste! And now is the time to engage in planting clematis seedlings. Let's talk about how to save the purchased seedlings, if the weather outside the window does not yet allow them to be planted in the ground, and how to plant these delightful flowers
Three important rules for caring for a clematis seedling before planting
Clematis seedlings are usually sold in small shipping pots, transplanted into light peat-based soil. The peculiarity of this soil mixture is that, firstly, it is extremely poor in useful nutrients, and secondly, it dries up very quickly. And the first task of the grower, if it is not yet possible to plant clematis on your site, is to make sure that this peat lump in the pot does not dry out. If this is allowed, then the peat will be very poor at retaining moisture, which will negatively affect the seedlings. It should be checked daily to see if the pot is damp enough. Especially if the slides are on a sunny windowsill.
If desired, you can transplant the seedling into a soil that is more moisture-intensive and rich in nutrients. And take a deeper pot for this. Or just a two-liter plastic bottle, cutting off the neck. But if the time is already approaching for disembarking to a permanent place, then you should not injure the plant once again. Just remember to water the seedling. And you can also make top dressing along with watering. For example, daily infusion of onion peel.
Another important point regarding the storage location for seedlings. If a specimen brought from the store looks pale, you should not immediately put it in a place well-lit by the sun. He needs to be given time to acclimatize and gradually accustom him to the sun.
The third important procedure, which it is imperative to expose not only clematis, but also other plants that have come into your home from a store or nursery, is fungicide treatment. This is necessary in order to prevent the possible multiplication of pathogens of fungal and bacterial diseases, as well as to prevent them from infecting other, healthy green pets that already live in your home. Spraying with fungicides is recommended to be repeated at least once every five days.
Trimming everything unnecessary and unnecessary
Often, to the delight of the florist, clematis seedlings are already sold with flower buds. But, unfortunately, this joy should not last long. Because all these buds will have to be cut. A weakened plant will now need to use all its strength to take root in a new place and develop a root system. And the buds will interfere with this.
In addition to the buds, before planting clematis in open ground, it is also necessary to cut off all the leaves on the cuttings, starting from the root collar up to 10 cm in height. This is necessary in order to deepen the root collar of the plant to a depth of about 10 cm when planting, and the leaves do not rot under the ground. Such deepening saves the perennial wintering in the ground from freezing in the cold snowless winter months.
Planting clematis seedlings in the ground
Before planting seedlings, you should check the weather forecast. It is important that there are no return frosts in the coming days. Just in case, it is recommended to prepare a nectank in order to cover the seedlings in case of a cold snap.
It is also important that in the first days in a new place, clematis is not under the bright rays of the sun. The same non-woven fabric can be used to shade the landings.
Don't forget to install the supports. First of all, do not forget that clematis is a climbing plant, and in order to reveal itself in all its glory, it needs a certain frame. In addition, the support is useful in order to throw a non-woven over it in case of cold weather or bright sun.
