From May to October, tuberous begonias delight the gardener's eyes with their abundant flowering. Well, in November, the flowers go to their well-deserved rest. How to prepare plants for the cold season? And can all plants be pruned and sent to rest?
When to start pruning begonias for the winter
Begonias are grown in pots both indoors and outdoors. If there is such an opportunity, then of course it is good to send flowers under the open sky in the summer. But after the flowers return on cold days under the roofs of our houses, you should not rush to start pruning and digging tubers to send them to refrigerators or a cellar.
It is necessary to let the plant acclimatize - this time. And the second is to allow time for the nutrients from the leaves and stems to transfer to the tubers. And only then proceed to pruning the plant.
By the way, even at this time, begonia still does not lose its attractiveness. After all, I stroke her flowers almost imperceptibly. They continue to maintain an aesthetic appearance, and then they simply fall off the bush. But when the leaves turned yellow and fell off, this is already a clear sign that the plant is ready for winter sleep.
Not all begonias need pruning
It is also very important to determine whether your begonia needs a rest period or not. The rule here is:
• begonias that were grown from a tuber can be cut off and sent to winter;
• Plants that were propagated by cuttings might not have time to form a nodule. Therefore, they should not be cut off and they do not need this time during the winter dormancy. After them, the usual care continues - watering and transferring to larger pots as the flower grows.
Sometimes growers are at a loss as to why they bought a tuberous begonia, but after cutting and digging the roots of the tuber, they did not find it. The answer is simple - you purchased a plant that was propagated by cuttings. During the warm period, the stalk managed to form a root system, but did not manage to set a tuber, or it formed very, very small, and it will not have enough strength to survive the winter.
What to do now? There is a chance to save the plant. If buds have formed near the root collar, then put sphagnum moss or other material that will keep moisture well on the bottom of the pot or glass. And put the root on top, without deepening the kidneys. Moisten the substrate as needed. And when the buds begin to grow, transplant the cuttings into a new pot.
How do you determine which begonia is in your pot - with a tuber or only with roots? There are two ways. First of all, watch your plant:
• begonia, which has a tuber, blooms very profusely;
• cuttings begonia does not bloom violently.
Well, the second way is to carefully dig out the ground in a pot and see. But it’s better not to carry out such an experiment. Begonia does not like such interventions. And even transplanting into a new pot he prefers to do by transshipment.
Therefore, beware of pruning plants that have been propagated by cuttings. The tuber can form within one and a half to two years.
Storing begonia tuber in winter
If you are sure that there is a nodule in the ground, then you can act in this way. Prune the plant first. Then remove the tuber and substrate from the pot. After that, clean the substrate along with the roots from the tuber. And let it dry for about a week. After this procedure, the remaining stumps are easily separated from the tuber. It is placed in a bag with slightly moistened moss. You can store it in boxes and boxes, covering them so that there is no access to light. The tubers are left in a cool place.
If young growth has formed in the pot, it does not need to be cut off. Can be neatly separated along with the roots and planted in a separate pot. If the roots are still very small, then first put them in a glass of water or in wet perlite.
