How to store radishes correctly

Radish is a very popular crop: it grows quite quickly and well, and not only root crops, but also leaves are edible. In addition, radishes are very useful - they are rich in coarse fibers that are not digested by the intestines and, swelling, remove carcinogens, cholesterol and toxins from it. As soon as the radish crop is harvested, the question of its storage immediately becomes relevant. And you can preserve crispy root vegetables in different ways, each of which is good in its own way

Harvesting radishes

Even if the conditions are very favorable for the growth of succulent radishes, the formation of nutritious roots does not occur simultaneously. Accordingly, the harvesting of this crop is almost always carried out selectively.

In the evening before harvesting radishes, the vegetation should be watered, and in the morning they begin directly to harvest. Morning hours are most suitable because they are relatively cool. And the plants do not have time to evaporate a rather impressive part of the moisture. If you remove the radish during the day, then it tends to wither.

During harvesting, the tops of the root vegetables are either cut or broken out, preserving the tiny tuft. High-quality radishes should be even, smooth and dense enough - lying roots lose moisture, becoming tasteless and soft.

The most suitable for storage will be a medium-sized radish - large roots are not always the most useful.

How to store radishes

After the tops of the radish are cut off, and the roots are well ventilated, they are placed in boxes, interspersed with sand. Subsequently, this sand must be regularly moistened.

On loggias, in cellars or basements, radishes are usually stored at a temperature of two to three degrees. All root crops must be systematically examined and diseased specimens must be discarded. Subject to all storage conditions, the radish retains its pleasant taste and juiciness for two to two and a half months.

Storing radishes at home

In order for the radish to remain juicy for several days, it must be thoroughly rinsed, then dried on paper or on a towel, then folded into polyethylene bags and sent to the refrigerator. At the same time, the packages are left slightly ajar. This simple method allows you to keep the radish as juicy as possible: mid-season varieties do not lose their juiciness from ten to fourteen days, and early varieties - from seven to ten days. The tops of the radishes are usually removed before refrigeration. And if the roots are stored with tops, then it must be periodically moistened.

By the way, it is better not to wash the radishes before sending them for storage - excess moisture can easily spoil it.

When placed in a refrigerator compartment specially designed for vegetables, radishes almost always retain their taste and remain strong. It is noteworthy that the root vegetables stored in the refrigerator contain much more nutrients, sugars and vitamin C compared to radishes grown in January in greenhouses.

If you cut off the tops and roots of a radish immediately after harvesting, then its storage time is unlikely to exceed five to six hours - such roots usually quickly lose their taste and wither. If you water the radish in the evening, and collect it in the morning, immediately shaking it off the ground and cutting off the tops a little (2 - 3 cm from the roots), but without touching the roots, then it will be perfectly preserved for three to five days. And if the harvest is planned at a different time of the day, then a couple of hours before that, the radishes also need to be watered.

Certain varieties of radishes can be preserved until the very New Year. Such varieties as the Red Giant, Dungansky and others have proven themselves especially well in this regard. The harvest of such radish is harvested before the onset of frost.
