The technology for growing yacon is a bit similar to that for potatoes. Only here there are several nuances, the knowledge of which will help to successfully introduce an unusual vegetable on your plots

Culture requirements

Yacon prefers fertile, loose soil. The yield on sandy loam increases in comparison with heavy chernozems. The sunny position allows the tubers to gain large size.

Loves wet places. Reacts negatively to stagnation, close location of groundwater, waterlogging. Heat-loving culture. Short-term frosts completely destroy the above-ground part. Thanks to its powerful roots, it tolerates short-term droughts.

Does not depend on the duration of light during the growing season.

It grows poorly after representatives of the nightshade family: tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant.

Varieties

The choice of varieties is small:

1. Sochi (tubers of fusiform or oval configuration).

2. Bios (fusiform).

3. Yudinka. A modern variety, introduced into the State Register since 2004. The maximum yield per square meter of tubers is 4-5 kg.

Growing

In the fall, the beds are enriched with humus, peat, ash. Heavy soils are loosened with additional sand. In early June, holes are dug up to a depth of 10-15 cm. They are planted in a square-nesting method 60 by 60 cm. With frequent planting, the yield is significantly reduced, the plants stretch out from a lack of light.

Spill water, plant prepared seedlings from pots. The ground level remains unchanged. Sprinkle with soil, compacted from above with your hands.

After 2 weeks, they are spud like a potato, forming ridges. The soil is mulched with sawdust or peat so that a crust does not form, moisture is retained as much as possible.

Water as the top layer of the soil dries up 2-3 times a week. Lack of water negatively affects the yield of tubers.

They are fed the complex fertilizer "Kemira for potatoes" 2 times with an interval of 2 weeks in the first half of the growing season.

Timely weeding, loosening allows you to destroy "competitors" on the site. Conserve nutrient reserves for the main crop.

Optimal growth conditions are formed at a temperature of 20-30 degrees, sufficient soil moisture.

Cleaning, storage

Dig up tubers as late as possible, without waiting for frost. Each region is guided by its own weather conditions. Over the last few months of autumn, the harvest can increase by almost 1.5-2 times, the sugar content of the finished product increases.

Brittle roots are carefully dug out with a shovel, trying to avoid injury. Cut the stems with a sharp knife at a height of 3 cm from the "nest".

The green mass is given for animal feed. The leaves are dried in a shady, well-ventilated place for winter, medicinal teas.

Rhizomes are first dried a little in a barn or veranda. Shake off the soil. They are folded into boxes in a thin layer, without dividing into separate tubers, sprinkled with dry sand. The stem particles are left on the surface. Store in a cool, dry place.

Slightly injured stolons are folded separately, after pretreating the wounds with wood ash. They are used for food in the first place.

Before use, the finished product is dried in the light for several days. This gives it additional sweetness.

The best temperature regime is + 4 … 5 degrees. A small amount of the crop is stored in a refrigerator, packed in a plastic bag.

Armed with the acquired knowledge, you can safely buy planting material and start planting yacon. Scientists call it the 21st century vegetable that can conquer the food market of the future. I hope your family will enjoy a culture that is healthy in all respects.
