March continues, spring is slowly winning its rights from winter. Coleus

I used to think that this is a houseplant and it only grows in pots on windowsills. Imagine my surprise when in Sochi I saw huge flower beds planted with coleuses with leaves of various colors. Firstly, the flower beds looked very elegant and beautiful, and secondly, their brightness and beauty did not depend on the flowering of the plant! The decorative coloring of the leaves allows you to create the most bizarre patterns on the flower beds and you do not need to worry that the coleus will fade and beauty will disappear.

Coleus seeds are sown for seedlings in the second half of March. The soil is prepared simply: peat is taken in equal proportions (you can replace it with purchased fatty earth), sand is garden soil from the site. It is advisable to disinfect sand and garden soil with boiling water or bake it in the oven. Gently but thoroughly mix everything. At the bottom of the seedling container, be sure to pour something for drainage. Small crushed stone, expanded clay will do, in extreme cases, you can break the foam with pieces (but this is in a pinch, it is still better to take a more environmentally friendly material). The drainage layer should be 1, 5-2 centimeters, no more. Pour the prepared soil mixture on top, moisten it with a spray bottle. Gently scatter Coleus seeds over the surface (by the way, if you want multi-colored Coleus, you can purchase ready-made mixtures so as not to buy many bags of seeds with different Coleus varieties) and slightly press them into the soil. It is not necessary to sprinkle with earth on top.

Then cover with foil and put in a warm place. Every day we open the film, airing the future seedlings and moistening the soil as needed. Seedlings will appear in about a week. We gradually increase the time without film, after about a week we completely remove the film. We water everything the same way from a sprayer as needed.

After the appearance of 3-4 true leaves, if necessary, the seedlings can be cut into separate containers. Can be left in a common container before landing in open ground. It is planted in open ground in the second half of May. You can form a flower bed, or you can plant it along the garden paths (dwarf coleus are suitable for this).

Summer Levkoy

Summer levkoy is also known as mattiola or gray levkoy. A lovely plant with a stunning heady aroma. I usually plant it in a flowerbed with herbs (sometimes I make a small Moorish lawn - and I also plant it with levka, for the sake of scent).

Seeds are sown in a universal soil (preferably purchased, but it is also possible in a mixture of peat with garden soil, we must disinfect the garden soil!). Pour soil into the container for seedlings, not reaching 2-3 centimeters to the edges, carefully scatter the seeds over the surface, lightly sprinkle them with wet sand on top. You don't need to cover. We are waiting for the sprouts and after the appearance we transfer them to a cool, but bright room. If there is not enough light, you need to illuminate with a lamp, otherwise the seedlings will be stretched up and weak. Watering is carried out as needed with warm water from a sprayer or spray bottle.

They are planted in open ground in May. It is advisable to choose a place for a flower bed in a well-lit, sunny or slightly shaded place.

By the way, levkoy can be one-year, two-year and perennial, so when purchasing, be sure to read the information on the seed packet!
