In the last article, we looked at 2 types of flowers that need to be planted for seedlings in February. But this is not all, there are several more names, the planting of which should be taken care of right now, so that the seedlings are ready on time
Salvia
This is a beautiful but thermophilic plant, and therefore in Russia it is distributed mainly as an annual. And in its homeland, in South America, this culture is considered perennial and grows successfully for several years without the need to plant new plants. Although, if you cover well the salvia (whose middle name, by the way, is sage) for the winter, then it can survive and start growing again in the spring. But such an outcome is unlikely, unfortunately, so some people use another option: they simply dig the roots together with a part of the soil for the winter and place them in any suitable container, then put them in the basement or in another cool room, and after the onset of heat they are planted again in the garden. Now let's move on to planting sage seedlings.
Sage seedlings are best sown in late February or early March. Any good soil is suitable for salvia, you can buy it, you can from your site. If you use soil from the site, then add a little compost, humus or just peat to it. Then moisten the soil before planting. Be careful, do not pour the soil too much, if it does happen, then let the container stand for a while so that the earth dries up.
Gently sprinkle the seeds of salvia over the surface of the soil, then, as if wiping between the hands, cover with earth on top. Place in a warm, bright place and wait for seedlings, remembering to periodically moisten the soil. Then, when the sage releases the fourth or fifth true leaf, it can be dived. It is best of all in separate containers or cells, so as not to injure the root system again later and to exclude the possibility of a painful "move" to a permanent place.
They are planted in the ground in May. When choosing a place for a flower bed, be guided by the information about a specific variety of salvia, since, depending on the species, it can grow well both in the sun and in the shade.
Petunia
Probably the most optimal plant for a garden or a summer residence, for any flower bed. In my opinion, it has many advantages: firstly, a huge selection of flowers, varieties and species, and secondly, it looks good both on the site and in flowerpots, pots, it is easy to create various compositions from it, and thirdly, it is not demanding to care, the main thing is to water and remove faded peduncles on time. And one more, important advantage, petunia blooms from the end of May until the onset of stable cold weather.
When choosing seeds, pay attention to hybrids. Of course, you cannot get seeds from them, and next year you will have to acquire seed again, but the hybrids are resistant to rain and wind and their appearance does not deteriorate after bad weather.
For sowing seeds for seedlings, I usually take a not very deep, but rather wide and long container, since I plant several species and varieties of this plant in one container. I prefer purchased soil, but you can also take garden soil, adding a little peat and sand to it.
Petunia seeds are simply scattered over the surface of moist soil in a prepared container, in no case burying them or sprinkling them with soil. Then the container is covered with foil and placed in a bright and warm place. You should not remove the film unless necessary. Carefully monitor the soil moisture, if necessary, gently spray with a spray bottle. After about a couple of weeks, you will see the first shoots. After the seedlings grow up and get stronger, you need to dive it. But do not take large containers, this plant is unusual and it develops better in a small container. Better then transplant again when the capacity becomes small for the plant.
Strengthened seedlings are planted in the soil around mid-May. By this time, the seedlings will be quite large, and some will even have time to acquire buds.
