Outside the window, spring, March, the sun begins to warm, worries are becoming more and more. And how to do everything when you need to plant seeds in order to get seedlings on time? In previous articles, we talked about seeds that needed to be planted in January and February. Now let's talk about those flowers, the seeds of which need to be planted in March, so that in May we have a good, strong seedling
I want to start with a delicate flower of an unusual color, while also a medicinal one - echinacea.
Echinacea
I grow it at home for two reasons: firstly, I really like the tall, unusual color flowers that look great in the center of the flower bed, and secondly, I use it as an immunostimulant. You can, of course, buy echinacea for children in the pharmacy, but somehow it's easier for me to grow it on my site. By the way, in addition to enhancing immunity, echinacea is famous for its excellent wound healing and hemostatic properties. For those who have a hive, echinacea is also useful, because it is considered an excellent honey plant. For a flower bed, you can choose any flower color: salmon, pink, yellow, crimson.
This flower is very unpretentious, grows well in any soil, but prefers non-acidic fertile, non-swampy places. It usually blooms in the second year, even planting seedlings does not affect this, but at the same time it is quite long - from early summer to mid-September.
If planting seedlings does not help to get a peduncle in the current year, why plant seedlings and tinker with them, isn't it easier to sow seeds right into the open ground? Unfortunately no. Echinacea seeds are probably one of the most long-growing. The first timid shoots appear as much as 40-45 days after sowing!
So, we prepare the soil, I take either a purchased one or mix it with a garden one with peat and compost in equal proportions. I fill the planting container, then gently scatter the echinacea seeds over the surface. Sprinkle on top with wet sand, a thin layer, literally a couple of millimeters. I put it in a bright, warm place, the air temperature should not fall below 15 degrees Celsius! I water with a spray bottle as needed. After the appearance of 2-3 true leaves, I plant it in open ground. I choose a sunny place for disembarkation, not in the shade.
Verbena
Everyone wants flowers to bloom as early as possible and bloom as long as possible. This description is fully consistent with verbena - it blooms in early summer and pleases the eye until the frost. Its bright balls come in a wide variety of colors: white, yellow, orange, crimson, lilac and even beige!
Verbena is unpretentious and tolerates drought well without losing its visual appeal. It grows in any soil. By the way, if you want to make it easier for yourself and not bother every year with verbena seedlings, then choose a permanent flowerbed for it, and it will reproduce well by self-seeding, every year the flowerbed will be filled with blooming balls.
For seedlings, verbena seeds are sown until the end of March, the optimal time is up to 20-25. Before planting, it is advisable to keep the seeds in a growth stimulator.
We fill the container for seedlings with any soil, you can take garden soil, but pre-process it from possible pests. We moisten the soil. Carefully scatter the seeds over the surface, without covering them with a layer of earth. It is not necessary to cover the container with foil. Watering should be done with a spray gun as the earth dries up, in no case do not pour! The first shoots will appear in 2 weeks, sometimes the shoots are delayed and appear after 3 weeks. After the seedlings grow up and get stronger, this will happen after mid-May, they are planted in open ground.
