March seems to be the first month of spring, but judging by the weather, it is rather a messenger of spring, the days are getting longer and the nights are shorter. On the street, despite the cold, the approach of warmth is already felt. And, therefore, very soon it is necessary to come to grips with gardening work on the street. In the meantime, there is still a little time in order to calmly sow seeds for seedlings, because we did not all planted in January and February. So, what can you plant in March and what factors should be considered when choosing seeds?
First, let's take a closer look at what needs to be considered? First, the climatic zone of your residence, because in different climatic zones, warming occurs at different times, somewhere earlier, somewhere later. Secondly, pay attention to the information indicated on the package about the timing of seed germination and the appearance of ripe fruits from the moment of germination. Thirdly, it is imperative to take into account how long it will take for our seedlings to grow and strengthen before they are planted in the ground. Fourth, be sure to pay attention to the thermophilicity of the plant, because in the cold zone thermophilic plants are unlikely to please you with a bountiful harvest (and indeed at least some kind of harvest).
And now we decide what can be planted in March?
Early varieties of cabbage
The planting period of seeds of all varieties of early cabbage just falls around the middle of the first spring month. This culture is growing rather slowly, the expectation of the first timid shoots can be from 7 to 14 days. Seedlings are also slowly growing; it will take 50-60 days for its complete formation and readiness for transplanting into open ground. That is, you will receive full-fledged seedlings only 2 months after the emergence of shoots. But further development of cabbage will go quickly, and in about 30-60 days you will get a full harvest.
Beet
If you do not like to sow it directly on the garden bed (there can be many reasons for this, from a banal difficult sowing, when a large number of seeds fall into the ground and then you have to thin out this culture until there is a simple lack of warm time for the full ripening of the root crop), but prefer to plant ready-made seedlings, then right now is the best time to plant seeds for seedlings. But only if a month later you have consistently warm weather on the street or you have taken a garden bed for beets in a greenhouse. This is due to the fact that keeping beet seedlings in the house for more than a month is not at all recommended, since it begins to stretch, and this will have an extremely negative effect on the future harvest. So it is better to count about a month ago from the planned planting of beets in open ground and, based on this, choose the exact date of sowing seeds for seedlings.
Tomatoes
In March, you still have time to sow tomato seeds for seedlings. Consider the germination and seedling time indicated on the seed packs and plant the seeds based on this information. Do not delay planting so that by the time of planting in open ground you have strong and hardened seedlings that have several full-fledged leaves.
Pumpkin
It can also be planted outdoors with seedlings, not just seeds. The timing of planting seedlings is from mid-March to the end of April, you will have to calculate the exact date yourself, depending on the time of warming. Please note that pumpkin does not like frost and cold soil very much, these factors can ruin your crop in the bud. We calculate the timing of sowing seeds for seedlings: the time for seedling emergence is 4-6 days, the optimal age of seedlings for transplanting into open ground is about a month. That is, from the moment of planting seeds for seedlings to planting them in open ground, a little more than a month will pass.
