On a hot afternoon, gazebos or verandas, beautifully entwined with ivy, grapes, morning glory or other garden loaches, beckon to them in the cool partial shade. In addition to their decorative properties, climbing plants are able to advantageously organize the space of the site: to hide something, but to emphasize something. Is it difficult to tame them?
Vertical gardening is rightfully considered one of the most beautiful elements of landscape design, which was very popular back in the Baroque era.
It is better to leave the exotic
There is a huge assortment of climbing plants that are offered in abundance both in garden markets and online stores. Choosing the right plant can be difficult. Therefore, before purchasing a vine, you need to understand what its purpose will be.
Most often, climbing plants are used to decorate the walls of a house, veranda or gazebo, as well as a hedge or for growing in conventional hanging containers. When choosing a liana, you need to take into account the characteristics of your site: soil type, climatic conditions, illumination, etc. You should not choose exotic vines that are poorly adapted to our climatic conditions. Catering to their whims, you can spend much more than on the usual types of curly.
Define character
Vines are usually divided into clinging, curly and climbing. In addition, there is also a classification based on their functional characteristics. The most popular species of vines for the middle lane will be divided into three groups:
1. Fast growing and exciting vast areas (wild grapes, clematis, akebia, honeysuckle-honeysuckle);
2. Winding columns or covering the walls with a magnificent carpet (nasturtium, sweet peas, common ivy, morning glory, creeping kobea, tunbergia);
3. Ground cover, oriented to the cardinal points:
a) hybrid clematis, ivy - for the north side;
b) honeysuckle, nasturtium, Ipomoea "Morning Glori" - for the south side;
c) maiden grapes, a variety of climbing roses - for the east side;
d) hops, clematis Montana, wisteria - for the west side.
The most unpretentious, among the loaches, are: lemongrass, daurian moonseed, maiden grapes, tekomma, actinidia, kampsis.
They like humus
The planting site affects the development of the plant, so it should be chosen carefully. Do not plant loaches at the corner of a building. There must be at least 15cm between them and the wall. Garden "climbers" growing near the wall contribute to the development of fungus, which causes the building to rot. The location of vines next to a drain or sewer pipe will not be particularly successful. Invasive plants can adversely affect loaches, so it is best to plant them at a safe distance from each other.
When preparing the soil for the vines, fertilize it well with humus. Thanks to this, the earth will not dry out quickly, and the water will linger well. To begin with, you need to place drainage in a spacious hole (for example, pieces of brick) and only then plant the sprouts of the vines you have chosen. Organic fertilizers or compost help the loaches grow well. Top dressing is necessary regularly, but the frequency depends on the type of plant.
Need support
Vertical loaches need support, such as ropes, arches, fences, wooden trellises, and more. Choose what is convenient for your plant and suits your landscape design. Strong materials that are resistant to stretching and erosion are used for support. It is better to paint them in advance, as the smell of fresh paint will prevent the plants from breathing normally. When installing the support, be careful not to damage the roots of the loach.
The plant must be watered regularly until it takes root, and the soil must be loosened. However, excess moisture is also harmful. Periodically arrange haircuts for the plant, because the support may not withstand the pomp of the vine. In the spring, young shoots are cut, and at the end of flowering, older ones.
Can be tasty and healthy
Loaches are quite frost-resistant. At 3 years old, they can cover walls up to the 2nd floor. They are not afraid of both the lack of light and temperature drops. The fruits of loaches such as lemongrass, grapes, blackberries and others have medicinal and nutritional properties.
Perennial plants die off in the fall, so annuals should be chosen for open balconies and terraces. Several species of lianas (hop-shaped pelargonium, Mayan bells, asparagus, etc.) will perfectly coexist in one container. By picking up plants with different flowering times, you can get loaches that bloom all round the summer.
