It is difficult to resist the beauty of peonies. The many modern varieties on the market make you want to enlarge your collection. Buying several tree peony bushes every year is expensive for the family budget. If someone you know grows this crop, ask for a few twigs. Try to multiply them on your own. How to make your dreams come true?
Breeding types
In culture, tree peonies are propagated by vegetative methods:
• layering;
• dividing the mother bush;
• stem cuttings, root cuttings;
• vaccination.
We will consider all options in more detail.
Advantages
Vegetative propagation has several advantages over seed propagation:
1. The new organism repeats the mother plant with pinpoint accuracy.
2. Earlier enters the flowering phase.
3. Promotes the rejuvenation of old bushes.
4. Easily restores missing parts.
5. Allows you to quickly and efficiently increase the number of seedlings.
Even for inexperienced gardeners, vegetative methods are fine. The likelihood of a positive result is significantly increased.
Dividing the bush
The easiest way for young summer residents. Division begins at the age of 6-7 years. It is not advisable to touch younger plants due to the small volume of the root system. Instances over 10 years old are often rotted.
For the Middle Lane, mid-August - late September are considered the best dates. Summer and autumn weather conditions are taken into account. Later division leads to the death of the "young". In early frosts without snow, the plants do not have time to take root.
Dig the mother bush from several sides with a large clod of earth. Rinse the roots with water. The stems are removed at a height of 20-50cm. Carefully examine, determining in which direction, how many incisions to make. They try not to spoil the roots during the procedure.
A good cut has 2-3 shoots with a powerful underground part. Sick, broken roots are ruthlessly removed. In the presence of rot, clean the rhizome with a knife, trying not to damage the shoots with buds. Fine hairs are shortened up to 15 cm, making smooth cuts.
Disinfect with one of the following drugs:
• with a strong solution of potassium permanganate, lowering the lower part for 5 minutes;
• rub with cotton swabs dipped in brilliant green;
• copper sulphate, kept for 25 minutes, concentration 100 g per bucket of water;
• 30 g of garlic infusion is diluted with a liter of liquid, placed for 40 minutes.
After disinfection, the sections are sprinkled with pure ash or mixed with an equal amount of colloidal sulfur. For a day, they are removed in the shade to heal wounds.
5 hours before disembarkation, the delenki are placed in a clay chatterbox with additives. The mixture is prepared from 2 tablets of heteroauxin, 50 g of copper sulfate, 500 g of wood ash, 10 liters of water are poured. The clay is added until a creamy consistency is obtained.
The bushes are removed in the shade to dry. The crust protects the roots from drying out during long-term transportation or shipment of planting material, additives contribute to the rapid restoration of lost organs.
When dividing, a minimum of root mass is left. A large number delays the growth of small suction roots, worsening the nutrition of the bush, and further leads to decay, disease, death. The whole process sometimes takes 3 years. Therefore, gardeners do not always understand for what reasons the plant disappeared.
The first winter, the delenki are covered with spruce branches, and a non-woven material is pulled on top.
This technique is only suitable for self-rooted tree peonies. The grafted bushes do not retain the signs of an overground scion.
We will consider the method of propagation by layering in the next article.
