The variety of methods allows you to get a sufficient amount of planting material for your site in a short time. Try several breeding options, choose the most convenient for you. Let's consider the technique of each method in more detail

Reproduction methods

The following breeding methods are suitable for bush clematis:

• division of an adult bush;

• cuttings;

• layering;

• seeds.

We will consider the technology of each option by examples.

Dividing the bush

The easiest method. Dig a bush at least 5 years old in early spring before bud break. Shake off the ground. Carefully cut into pieces with a knife. 2-3 buds are left in each piece. Wounds are treated with brilliant green or sprinkled with crushed coal (ash). Dry slightly to heal the tissue. They are transplanted to a new place.

Cuttings

Use the green parts of the plant. At the end of June, twigs 15-20 cm long are cut. The bottom pair of leaves is removed completely. On the top - leave 2 plates out of five on each side.

Before planting, keep in a glass of water. Lower cut at an angle of 45 degrees 1-2 cm below the kidney. Upper - straight 1 cm above the leaves.

They are preparing a garden bed on the street. Rotted manure or peat, sand are brought in. They carefully dig up, achieving good looseness of the soil, choosing the roots of malicious weeds.

Furrows are cut every 20-25cm. Holes are formed with a thick stick. The lower end of the cutting is dipped in root powder. It is lowered into the hole to the level of the leaves. They crumple the ground well in a circle. Distance in a row 15-20cm. Watered with water, mulched with dry peat.

Cover the nursery with a film through the arcs. Once every two weeks, a tablespoon of a tablespoon in a bucket of water or nettle infusion diluted 10 times with the addition of 1 tablespoon of ash and superphosphate is fed with a complex fertilizer "Health for Flowers".

After 3-4 weeks, the buds in the axils of the leaves will give a new growth, which is an indicator of successful rooting. At the end of summer, the shelter is gradually removed, accustoming the plants to the conditions of the street.

For wintering, wooden tall boxes are placed above the seedlings or the height of the arches is reduced to 20 cm above ground level. Cover in two layers with a nonwoven fabric.

Layers

Bend the branch to the ground, dig a hole 10-12 cm deep. Sprinkle with water. The stem of the mother plant is pinned with iron hooks. Buried with earth. All summer, they monitor the moisture content of the soil, not allowing it to dry out. Roots appear by autumn. Seedlings are separated in the spring of next year.

Seed method

The most difficult, long-lasting method of propagation of bush clematis is the seed method. Seedlings bloom for 3-4 years. Its advantage: it gives a lot of planting material at the same time.

Clematis pungent in favorable years gives abundant self-seeding around the bush. In the Antropurpurea variety, this phenomenon was not observed during 15 years of cultivation. Seeds ripened single in rare years.

For erect forms, hereditary traits are preserved, for varietal whole-leaved ones, the gene set of parents is not always repeated.

To grow clematis from seeds, prepare the soil before frost. They dig a garden bed, bring in humus, sand. Cut grooves 5 cm deep.

The grains are harvested in mid-October, cleaned of the fluffy part. Sow immediately on the beds. They need mandatory stratification.

The second option is to sow in small bowls, put in a cellar or refrigerator until spring with a temperature of no higher than 5 degrees.

The first shoots appear in June. All summer long they take care of thin stalks, preventing the weeds from drowning out the "young growth". Water in moderation. They are fed 2-3 times per season. Pinch the growth point, directing all the forces of the plant to the formation of powerful roots.

The first two years are covered for the winter with non-woven material through the arcs. For 3 years in the spring they are transplanted to a permanent place.

In the next article, we will learn how to properly grow bush clematis.
