Meticulous breeders are slowly getting to the wild herbs we all know well, turning them into decorative garden flowers. They also paid attention to a medicinal plant that sometimes grows in gardens like a weed, with the name "Yarrow". To date, many forms of cultural yarrow have been bred, differing in shades of flowers. It is important that the decorative yarrow is not only able to decorate a flower bed, but also has a beneficial effect on the growth of plants growing in its neighborhood
Three types of decorative yarrow
Yarrow Ptarmika
This species of yarrow for its snow-white flowers is also called "pearl mussel", and sometimes "sneeze grass".
The plant has a creeping rhizome and quickly conquers the suburban space. Therefore, in order to limit it to certain limits, it is necessary to take care of the barriers to the roots.
A tall perennial plant reaches a height of 60 centimeters. White large double inflorescences, similar to pearls, bloom from June until frost. Propagated only by dividing rhizomes.
Yarrow or cut grass
This species grows 20 centimeters taller than the pearl mussel. It is not only decorative, but used for medicinal purposes (it was the yarrow that the legendary Achilles was healed), as well as as a spice in cooking. Good honey plant.
The species has many different varieties, differing in flowers of all kinds of shades of red. You can propagate by rhizome or seeds. If you want to avoid self-seeding of yarrow, you need to remove wilted inflorescences in a timely manner.
Yarrow meadowsweet
It differs from the two above-mentioned species in tall stature, growing up to 1.5 meters. But there are also undersized varieties. It propagates like yarrow by dividing rhizomes and seeds.
Yellow and golden inflorescences adorn erect stems with beautiful carved leaves.
Growing
A very unpretentious perennial can grow in one place for up to 5 years, after which it is required to plant it. Yarrow grows at a fast pace, so the distance between the bushes should be at least 30 centimeters.
Loves sunny places, but withstands a little shading. Drought-resistant.
Yarrow is unpretentious to soils, it can grow on any. On organic-rich soils, it grows powerful and thick-leaved, but refuses to bloom. Therefore, sandy soils with a small amount of humus are preferable for abundant flowering.
It is resistant against diseases and pests, protecting not only itself from them, but also the plants growing nearby.
For the winter, the aboveground part of the plant is cut off at a height of 10 centimeters from the soil surface.
Use in the garden
Yarrow is an excellent honey plant.
Low-growing varieties are suitable for alpine slides. Medium and tall are good for beddings, for medium to background mixborders, for Moorish lawns and nature gardens.
The beneficial effect of yarrow on neighboring plants is complemented by its repellent qualities: its spicy smell is not to the taste of ants and their "milk cows" - aphids; mosquitoes and flies; beetles.
Yarrow can inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, but it helps the growth of beneficial bacteria. This property is used in composting. In addition, by adding the plant to the compost heap, you enrich the compost with calcium, potassium and sulfur.
Yarrow will add a spicy aroma and decorate any bouquet, both from fresh flowers and dried flowers.
Healing properties
Yarrow infusions help the digestive system to work better, increase appetite. Yarrow preparations have antiallergic, bactericidal, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, hemostatic action.
