Terms of cuttings

Using this method, you can create shady areas on the site from different varieties of clematis. Share the plantings with your neighbors and they will also provide you with the necessary material. The grafting procedure is carried out together with the annual pruning of the plant in early summer. Young green shoots are better suited for cuttings. In the south, this is done from May to the end of June, and in the middle lane, such an operation is carried out until the end of July.

The grafting method gives good results. With the right actions, the survival rate is almost 90 percent.

Algorithm of actions

1. Prepare everything you need first. You will need: a very sharp knife and pruning shears, preferably a cutting board, a root growth stimulator, a pot of potting soil and a covering material.

2. In the spring of a young two-year-old plant, select several young shoots that do not exceed 80-90 cm in length. They should be resilient and flexible.

3. Place the cut off shoots on the prepared board and cut off the bottom 3 cm above the internode. On the other hand, cut, stepping back from the internode 4-5 cm lower. Thus, 2-3 cuttings can be obtained from one branch. Cut off the leaves from one side of the branch.

4. Prepare a mixture of peat and sand 2 to one, put it in the prepared containers and disinfect it with boiling water or a pink solution of potassium permanganate. If your capacity is about 500 ml, then 4-6 cuttings can be planted in it.

5. Dip the prepared cuttings into the solution for root formation, using the instructions, keep the allotted time. Next, we immerse each stalk in the ground for half a centimeter and water it carefully.

6. Cover the seedlings with plastic and heat. It should be remembered that the container should not be exposed to direct sunlight, and the temperature should not exceed 22 degrees. Watering should be regular.

7. In 3-4 weeks the roots will form in the sprouts. And after another 2-3 weeks, each can be transplanted into an individual pot. These new plants are planted in the ground only next spring. And for hardening and wintering, the pots can be lowered into the cellar. At the end of April, clematis can be planted in a permanent place. In the first year, flowering should not be allowed so that the plants gain strength.

Growing clematis from seeds

Clematis seeds depend on the plant variety, therefore they differ in appearance.

Clematis Farges and Helios have small seeds. Their size does not exceed 5mm in length. The germination period can last up to 4 months.

Grape-leaved and Manchu clematis have medium-sized seeds. They can be up to 6 cm long. And such seeds can sprout up to six months.

Siberian clematis and Vititsella have large seeds. They reach a size of 1 cm and sprout up to a year. Therefore, it is easier to grow them by cuttings.

Stratification and sowing of clematis seeds

Since the seeds of the plant sprout slowly, it is recommended to stratify them. In the spring, seeds are sown in containers filled with a mixture of peat and sand in equal proportions. The containers are placed in a cool place (temperature not higher than 5 degrees) for 2-3 months. One month will be enough for medium seeds. A refrigerator may be suitable for these purposes. It is possible to stratify seeds in the garden under a layer of snow of about 20 cm, but you should protect them from various rodents using a reliable plastic box.

Small seeds of clematis can only be soaked for 4-5 days by regularly changing the water. Then sow the seeds in boxes and put them in a lighted place at a temperature of 25 degrees. Do not let the soil dry out.

Picking and planting a clematis seedling

When 2 leaves appear on the sprouts, they can be dived into separate cups. Protect young shoots from drafts and direct sunlight. As soon as heat is established, they can be planted in the ground. When planting, we deepen the neck by 10 cm, after watering the soil we mulch with peat.

Small-flowered clematis will bloom in the first year, and large-flowered ones the next.
