Irises

I really love these unpretentious flowers. Caring for them requires very little effort, the main thing is to water on time, and periodically plant new shoot-tubers, and every year these unusually beautiful flowers with delicate petals and light, subtle aromas will delight you with lush flowering

Nowadays, there are about 800 different varieties of irises. But how many colors and shades are unknown, most likely no one counted them. I have more than 10 colors and shades of irises on my house plot. Moreover, in one flower, various color combinations can be found: purple with brown, yellow with lilac, and so on. But my favorite is the color of the dawn sky, this color cannot be conveyed in words, and the camera, unfortunately, distorts it.

Choosing a place for irises

How to choose the right place for planting irises and what should you pay attention to? First, it should be remembered that irises are light-loving plants, so the flower bed should be located in a well-lit place in the sun. In the shade, irises, of course, will not die, they will grow and maybe even bloom. But the shadow leads to the fact that the main power of the flower goes into the leaves, and there is practically no energy left for flowering, so it will be meager and fleeting.

The second thing to pay attention to is the depth of groundwater. The roots of irises should not be waterlogged, so the deeper the groundwater in the iris area, the better the flowers. With a close location of groundwater, as well as with excessive watering, brown spots may appear on the leaves and flowers, and over time, the rhizomes will simply rot.

Iris care

Caring for irises, as I wrote earlier, is very simple. It consists in timely weeding, loosening the soil, watering, infrequent feeding and pruning of faded inflorescences and old leaves. The first top dressing is usually done in early spring with dry fertilizers (do not forget that most often in early spring the soil is very wet, therefore, in order to avoid rotting of the plant, it does not need to be watered, even with fertilizers). Fertilizer needs a complete mineral, that is, containing all minerals. The amount of such fertilizer per flower is about 10 grams. The second feeding is carried out during the period of bud formation, before flowering. We take the fertilizer the same and in the same quantities. But for the third, last, top dressing, we will need another fertilizer - phosphorus or potassium, but also dry. You can liquid, but only if there is a drought in your area. Phosphate or potash fertilizers will help prepare the plant for winter.

Transplant (division, reproduction) of irises

Irises are propagated by tubers (thickened rhizomes). Since the number of these rhizomes-tubers increases every year, so that the roots are not pushed to the surface, they are divided and planted once every 3 years. The optimal time for dividing and replanting plants is immediately after the flowering phase. If the transplant is carried out later, then the bush will not have time to root and may simply die in winter.

Before transplanting, you need to prepare the soil: dig up, loosen and fertilize.

Attention! Manure is not suitable as fertilizer! Next, we select a bush for transplanting, dig up, carefully divide the rhizome, remove the earth from it. After that, it is advisable to put the root in a disinfectant solution (a weak solution of potassium permanganate is suitable). After holding the root in the solution for about half an hour, we take it out, dry it and put it in the prepared hole, straighten the roots, sprinkle it with earth. No need to water.

The distance between the planted rhizomes should be 30-40 centimeters so that the grown flowers do not interfere with each other.
