Among the many flowers, Siberian irises occupy a leading position. Thanks to the efforts of breeders, more than 100 varieties with interesting shapes have been created. What are the advantages of an old representative of its kind?
Advantages of irises
The Siberian collection is distinguished by:
1. Resistance to diseases, pests. The roots, which resemble a strong wire, do not rot, unlike the stolons of bearded representatives. Dense narrow leaves are less attacked by harmful factors.
2. Excellent wintering in the harsh conditions of the Middle belt, northern regions. Withstand frosts down to -35 degrees under snow cover.
3. Unpretentiousness to growing conditions. Small inflorescences perfectly resist difficult weather conditions: wind, rain. Strong stems do not break under the influence of the elements. They can grow in one place for 7 years without a transplant, without requiring a lot of time to care.
4. Drought resistance. The deep root system draws moisture from the underlying horizons, providing plants with the necessary elements.
5. High decorativeness in mixborders. The graceful structure of narrow leaves, a large number of buds (four-year-old bushes form up to 40 pieces), a wide range of colors - makes them the favorites of decorators.
6. Rapid growth of bushes, different types of flowering. A distinctive feature of the variety is the sequential opening of the petals for a long time or the bouquet flowering of the whole plant at the same time.
At the heart of modern hybrids of non-bearded Siberian irises are three species (Siberian, horned, blood-red). New varieties have absorbed all the best qualities from their distant ancestors.
Modern breeding
The wild forms of Siberian irises are predominantly blue. Breeders, through complex crosses, have achieved an expansion of the color range. Along with monochromatic specimens, motley variants with a grid pattern appeared.
The second direction was aimed at increasing the number of petals, creating terry, orchid forms. Modern varieties are distinguished by increased decorative qualities in combination with plant resistance to adverse environmental factors.
To begin with, here are a few special terms used in the description of irises:
• Fouls. Outer perianth lobes (3 lower petals).
• Standards. Domed inner lobes (upper 3 petals).
• Signal. Bright spot in the center of the petal.
Let's take a closer look at the novelties of breeding.
Variety of varieties
Imperial Opal
Terry (up to 20 pieces) delicate lavender petals with a shade of pink in the center bloom in late June - early July. Outwardly, they resemble beautiful roses with a diameter of 10-12 cm. The net pattern at the base (yellow-lilac-white) gives a special charm. Height 70-90 cm. Resistant to spring floods, snowless winters.
Kaboom
Terry specimens are collected from 9-12 petals, iridescent with a blue-violet velvet shade. Looks neon on cloudy days. The mesh at the base consists of a white-yellow background with dark stripes and specks. The diameter of the buds in full dissolution is 12-14 cm, the height of the bushes is 75 cm. The flowering time is May-June. Feels great next to artificial reservoirs, has a high reproduction rate.
Double Standard
The bush is 80-100 cm high. In June-July, bright blue-violet buds 14-15 cm in size with a yellow center decorated with thin dark veins of unique beauty open up. The xiphoid greenery is decorative throughout the summer. Forms dense sod that can withstand short flooding by melt water.
Cherry Fling
Cherry brown corrugated fouls with yellow mesh signal. The standards are light lilac, wavy along the edge. They attract with a delicate sweetish scent. Vigorous stems, 70 cm high, appear in June.
Miss Apple
The growth of the bushes is 60-75 cm. The unusual color of the foul fascinates with its velvet rich burgundy shade with a yellow signal in the middle, dotted with dark veins. Lilac-red gamut standards. A sweet, light aroma spreads around the plants.
The list of wonderful representatives is endless.
