Features of irises

Iris has been familiar to man for many centuries. The name of the plant is of Greek origin and means "rainbow" - in honor of the goddess Iris from ancient Greek mythology. In order for irises to delight with blossoming buds for a long time, it is recommended to grow varieties of different flowering periods:

• The early ones bloom their petals in the second half of May;

• Mid-early bloomers in the garden in the first decade of June;

• Late varieties paint the flower bed with bright colors throughout June and early July.

Irises are perennial rhizome plants. Each year, their above-ground vegetation dies off, and the rhizomes remain to winter in the ground. Meanwhile, the replacement buds remain in the axils of the dried leaves.

Immediately after the end of flowering, you can reproduce your favorite varieties. Just at this time, the growth of the root system is activated. This factor contributes to the better survival of the delenka in a new place. If the florist missed this moment and was late with planting, it must be remembered that this procedure must be completed before mid-September. Otherwise, your irises will simply not have time to take root, and the frost will simply squeeze them out of the flower bed.

Such a feature of iris rhizomes as an exit to the surface of the soil can cause some trouble. All attempts by flower growers to cover them with earth, as a rule, remain unsuccessful - after a while they again begin to look out of the ground. This can cause their death in severe frosts. Serious freezing temperatures also lead to freezing of the rhizomes when they are close to the surface. But nature has laid in them the ability to sink back into the soil closer to winter. And despite the fact that irises hide their roots deeper into the ground, it is recommended to arrange additional shelter for the winter. This can be a layer of soil mixture from the ground with peat. Well, with the arrival of spring, this veil should be removed.

Another interesting feature of the rhizomes of this perennial is its ability to "travel" around the site. If left unchecked, this love of movement will easily escape from their original landing site.

Conditions for growing irises

A place for a flower bed with irises should be chosen in open sunny areas. But you also need to make allowances for the terrain and features of the weather in the summer. If your region has sultry May and early summer, light partial shade from trees growing nearby will only benefit. But there is no reason to arrange a flower bed directly in the trunk circles or in full shade. Here, your plants will acquire dense green foliage, but flowering in such conditions is rare.

Iris has special requirements for soil moisture. The flower planting corner should not have high groundwater. Plants are damaged by excessively moist soils. As a last resort, the area intended for planting irises is improved with artificial drainage. However, during the flowering period, they really need watering.

The best types for planting flowers will be light loams. Heavy clay soils must be diluted with sand, peat. You should also pay attention to the acidity of the soil. Lime is added if necessary.
