Sowing cactus seeds
Sowing cactus seeds is carried out in the spring (with the exception of South American species, for them the optimal time comes at the end of summer). For crops, bowls with drainage holes are required - they are necessary both for removing excess liquid and for moistening the soil. You can also use small pots and cups, low drawers.
At the bottom, a drainage layer must be provided. It is made from fine gravel, shards. The soil mixture for sowing is made up of:
• turf land - 2 parts;
• deciduous land - 2 hours;
• coarse sand - 2 hours;
• fine charcoal - 1 tsp.
The containers are filled with earth so that about 2 cm remains to the edge. Then the mixture is compacted and another 0.5 cm of sifted substrate is poured.
The day before sowing, it is recommended to soak the seed in warm water. After that, you need to process them with a solution of potassium permanganate, and then dry.
The sowing grooves are made about 2 cm deep, the row spacing is also kept at a distance of 2 cm. The seeds are placed no closer than 1 cm from each other.
Conditions for the maintenance of crops
After planting the seeds, it is advised to sprinkle the surface of the substrate with charcoal crushed into dust. This will help prevent mold growth. The first soil moistening is carried out through the drainage holes. For this, containers with crops are placed in a basin of water. Its temperature should be slightly higher than the room temperature. The plates are left in water until the surface of the substrate is moistened.
Then the crops are covered with glass and left in a warm, fairly bright place, but not in direct sunlight. In the daytime, the temperature should be within + 25 … + 26 ° С, with the arrival of night it is reduced to + 16 … + 17 ° С.
Cactus sprouting
The peculiarity of the propagation of cacti by seeds is that they rarely germinate at the same time. If the strongest can show seedlings already a week after sowing, then other specimens from the same batch germinate for a whole month. Plants from the first shoots are the most successful for growing.
Before emergence, the substrate must be regularly moistened so that it does not dry out. The water temperature should be about + 30 ° C, it is filled with a spray bottle and sprayed on the surface of the nursery. At least once a week, moisten the soil through the drainage holes.
With the appearance of seedlings in the morning and evening hours, you can let the cacti stand in the sun. But at noon it is necessary to continue shading delicate seedlings. The watering regime should now change. The next one is carried out after the surface of the earth dries out.
The fact that the time has come to dive cacti is evidenced by the appearance of thorns. They are still planted in a common container, but in such a way that the distance between the plants is approximately the diameter of the seedlings. The transplant is carried out with an earthen lump. Young roots do not need to be pinched. Make sure that in the hole in a new place they do not bend up.
After picking for three days, the soil under the plants is not moistened. They also need shelter. The next transplant is carried out in late spring and early August.
Caring for young plants consists in carefully loosening the soil, watering and processing the soil with crushed charcoal. In addition, mold can be fought with an aqueous solution of copper sulfate. Plants will grow faster if they are illuminated.
