Indoor plants are more often propagated in a vegetative way - by cuttings, division, layering, offspring, children. Basically, such work falls in the spring months. But some flowers, such as begonia, can be propagated by seed as early as winter. Sowing of seeds is also used during the reproduction of such decorative flowering indoor plants as primroses, sinningia, cyclamens. In a similar way, you can grow palms and dracaena. If you want to master this science, knowledge of the basic rules for the propagation of indoor flowers by seeds will come in handy

Sowing containers

As containers for sowing seeds, you can use different "dishes" - and pots, and bowls, and boxes. The choice depends on the number of seeds to be sown as well as the amount of suitable land available.

When there are few seeds, they can be sown directly into pots. But with a shortage of high-quality soil mixture, it will be wiser to use bowls. Well, when a "global" sowing of a large number of seeds is planned, it is better to take boxes, from which it will be convenient to move the seedlings into separate pots.

If containers are reused, they must be disinfected. The easiest way is to first wash with boiling water, and then rinse with any disinfectant solution.

Recommendations for the composition of the soil mixture

The filling of the pots begins with the device of the drainage layer. If you act "according to science", then broken shards are first laid on the bottom. Instead of them, you can take expanded clay. Well, to save money, ordinary stones will also come off.

The next layer is a mixture of coarse sand mixed with pieces of charcoal. This completes the drainage device.

Now you can fill the pots with soil mixture. Light soil is used for sowing seeds. For example, humus or deciduous, preferably with an admixture of sand. In this case, it will absorb moisture well enough and at the same time, it will be good to let excess water pass to the bottom of the container.

When the pots are filled with potting soil, shake the containers slightly. This is done so that the earth settles, and the surface can be leveled qualitatively.

Features of sowing seeds of different sizes

Some flowers have seeds as small as dust. And others have more impressive sizes, and you can take them by the grain with your hands. And sowing seeds of different sizes has its own differences.

To facilitate sowing small seeds, it is recommended to mix them with sand. To do this, take a sheet of paper. Fold it in half. Then a mixture of seeds and sand is poured into the resulting "envelope". And evenly distribute it over the soil surface through the groove of the folded sheet, gently tapping it with your fingers from below.

You can also use well-dried soil instead of sand. But at first, without having enough practice behind your back, it is better to take sand, because it is better visible on the ground. And you can control how evenly the seeds are spread over the surface.

After the seeds are spread over the surface of the ground, they are gently pressed with a dry board. The main mistake of novice growers is that they cover small seeds with a layer of earth, and then complain about the quality of the seeds and the fact that they will not sprout in any way. And you don't need to do this. It is enough to moisten the seeds through a spray bottle. And the earth itself will "suck in" the seed just enough for shoots to appear.

Large seeds, on the other hand, need to be spread out on the surface and then pressed into the ground. After that, pour the soil mixture on top. Its thickness should be slightly greater than the thickness of the seeds themselves. Plantings with large seeds are recommended to be watered through a strainer.

Crop care

The seed boxes are covered with glass. It will have to be lifted daily and wiped from the collected condensation. But when the soil is not moist enough, droplets do not collect on the glass. Then it is necessary to take measures to moisten the soil mixture. It is optimal if the pots and boxes have holes on the bottoms. Then the containers are placed in a basin of water. And they leave it in it until the ground is moist enough.

When seedlings do not want to appear for a long time, it may be that the room temperature is too low. It should be around + 20 °… + 25 °. To remedy the situation, you can leave the drawers next to the radiators.

When the seedlings finally appear, you need to immediately install the boxes in a well-lit place. If you delay with this, the seedlings will begin to stretch. And this negatively affects both the quality and health of future flowers.

When picking seedlings into larger pots for the development of the root system, the roots can be pinched. But not every flower is allowed to do this operation. For example, it is prohibited when transplanting seedlings of levkoy, dracaena, palm trees. Not all plants are equally resistant to this kind of root damage.
