Reproduction of Saintpaulia

The violet can seem like a rather moody plant. But with proper care, the African beauty pleases its owners with bright variegated flowering almost all year round. And another advantage of this room culture is that it is easy enough to propagate it at home. Moreover, this can be done in different ways - which grower is more convenient and familiar

Propagation of Saintpaulia by seeds

They begin to reproduce by seeds in February, and continue this process in March. If you managed to collect seeds from your home violets, you need to mark this day in your diary - it will be a starting point to determine when to start sowing. Experts recommend carrying out such work a month or two after collection.

For sowing seeds, the soil mixture is mainly composed of calcined sand and a small amount of peat moss. Sphagnum can be replaced by rubbed leafy earth. The substrate is poured in a thin layer into saucers, bowls. It is also convenient to use ordinary pallets for sowing seeds. This miniature nursery is covered with glass. Care consists in regular airing of crops.

Seedlings are shown after two and a half - three weeks from the day of sowing. Saintpaulia is recommended to be grown from seeds with a pick. The first is carried out in a month. The procedure is repeated again after 6-7 weeks.

How to collect violet seeds

To get quality seeds, the grower must help his plants with artificial pollination of violets. For this, a strong healthy plant is looked after, the buds of which have dissolved simple flowers. It is necessary to remove the stamens on them. These will be maternal specimens. The role of the father flower will be played by varieties that are distinguished by bright color, beautiful leaf shape, duration and quality of flowering. On a flower that has just opened its petals, a stamen is cut with a new blade. The pollen collected in this way is transferred to the stigma of the pistil of the mother plant. The same operation is repeated the next day.

Under favorable conditions, the result of fertilization will be visually noticeable already a week after pollination - the ovary should gradually increase in size. Experienced growers note that when pollinated in the spring, the seeds can ripen in 5 months, maximum - within six months. If this procedure is carried out at other times of the year, then the process will take longer.

It is important to collect the seeds at the right time. This is not started before both the seed box and the pedicel dry up. Ripe seeds will be dark brown, almost black in color. Open the box carefully, the seeds of violets are very small.

Other ways of breeding violets

Saintpaulias reproduce well vegetatively. They perfectly tolerate the division of the bush. When it is not possible to divide the mother plant in such a way that the roots on the rosette are preserved for each delenka, they can be easily rooted in a vessel with water. The diaper is placed in a vessel so that the cut barely touches the water. You can start transplanting into the ground when the new roots reach a length of approximately 1.5-2 cm.

Propagation by cuttings can be carried out at any time of the year. To do this, cut a good medium-sized leaf with a petiole. If the planting material was taken from friends, it is necessary to calculate the time so that within the next two hours the leaf will be put on rooting. When this is not possible, it must be moistened and closed in a jar.

Rooting is carried out in the same way as when dividing a bush. So that the stalk touches the water only with a cut, the container is filled with water, and then covered with cardboard with a hole for the petiole. So the leaf will stick to the paper, and the stalk, meanwhile, will take root in the water.
