To create a hedge, a large amount of planting material is required at a time. Buying from nurseries will result in a significant amount. You can arrange your own mini-garden on the site. Purchase 1-2 plants as starting material. Then multiply in any available way

Breeding types

For shrubs, 3 types of increasing planting material are suitable:

• seeds;

• layering;

• cuttings.

Let's consider the subtleties of each method in more detail.

Seed method

In most cases, the hereditary characteristics of the parental forms are not preserved: variegation, bright color of the plates, plant height. When sowing seeds, a lot of planting material is obtained at the same time. The method is used primarily by breeders to develop new hybrids with improved traits.

Seedlings bloom for 3-4 years. In the first 2 seasons, they grow slowly, primarily increasing the root mass. They require close attention at the initial stage of development.

Layers

The method is applicable to adult specimens 3-5 years old. In early spring, before bud break, the strongest shoots are chosen in the upper part of the bush. Carefully dig the grooves. Cuts are made on the bark on the underside.

Processed with root powder. Pin to the ground with wire staples. The end is brought out, tied to a peg. Water the place where the shoots were laid with water.

Fall asleep with a light, fertile substrate consisting of sand, peat, humus, garden soil in a ratio of 1: 2: 1: 1. Form a mound. To retain moisture, mulch with sawdust, straw or mown grass.

All summer they monitor soil moisture. If necessary, watered abundantly, alternating with fertilizing with complex fertilizer (3 times per season). The buds are harvested, keeping the strength for rooting. Until spring, they are left to winter next to the mother bush.

In early May, a branch is cut off from an adult plant. Dig it carefully, preserving the roots as much as possible. Transferred to a permanent place. Saplings bloom 2-3 years after rooting. The yield of planting material is 3-5 pieces from 1 adult plant.

Cuttings

Rooting of woody (winter) or green cuttings of the current year is used. In the first version, the branches are cut at the beginning of May, before bud break, in the second - at the end of June, after the regrowth of young shoots.

Divide the "sticks" into segments 8-15 cm long with 2-3 pairs of leaves (buds). The lower ones are removed, the upper ones are cut in half. An oblique cut is made in the lower part, from above - at an angle of 90 degrees, 1 cm above the kidney. Lightly dust with root.

They dig a bed, scattering compost and sand over the surface to loosen the soil. Choose the hard-core weeds. Grooves are cut every 15-20 cm. Depending on the speed of shoots, distances in a row are set 10-20 cm. Spill abundantly with water or a weak solution of potassium permanganate.

Planted at an angle of 45 degrees to the surface, leaving 1-2 buds above the ground. Compact the soil next to the handle with your hand, ensuring tight contact with the ground. Cover with a film through the arcs, shade with a non-woven material.

The entire season monitors the moisture content of the substrate, preventing it from drying out. Water it 1-2 times a week. A month later, with favorable rooting, the seedlings begin to grow. They are fed 2-3 times over the summer with complex fertilizer. The buds are removed at the initial stage of development.

They remove the shelter at the end of August, accustoming the plants to the dry air of the street. Leave the "young" in the seedling bed for the winter. The next spring, they are transplanted to a permanent place.

This method produces a large number of new seedlings while maintaining parental characteristics. Plants bloom for 2 years after transplantation.

The formation of the "fence", planting, leaving will be considered in the next article.
