Roses have a difficult, prickly character. The status of the queen of the garden obliges to be demanding. But she is not as capricious as some growers think. And with simple care it will live and smell in your garden for many years. So what should you do when preparing your rose garden for the cold winter season?
Preparing a rose for shelter
Preparation of a spray rose for shelter begins ahead of time. These works will start in October. First of all, it is recommended to cut the lower leaves on the bushes with a secateurs. And also to work with a rake - to remove crumbling dry foliage under the bushes. After this procedure, the roses need to be given a break for a week or two until the moment when it is time to prune under cover.
Shelter pruning also has its own characteristics. You need to cut the branches very carefully.
• First, look at where the bud is located on the branch. And make a cut about 1.5-2 cm above it.
• The second feature - try to make a cut at an angle, then in case of precipitation, and if water gets under the shelter, drops will flow down the cut from the slope, and not remain on the "stump".
• What else you should pay attention to is the color of the branch cut. It's good when he's white. But when the fabrics have turned black, it means that the rose is sick. And it is necessary to cut and shorten this shoot until a healthy white cut appears.
How to prune roses low? The height of the bush is left approximately as high as you are ready to build a shelter.
How to cover roses for the winter?
The best option for covering a rose is with lutrasil or spunbond. This material is valuable for the property that it is porous, and allows plants to "breathe", and during thaw days in winter, roses will not vomit and rot under it.
However, it is undesirable to simply throw the covering material over the bush. It's good if it snows in winter. But if a non-woven fabric is simply thrown onto a bush without any frame, then under the weight of the snow that has fallen, it can break on the branches. It is a pity for the material, which could last not one year, but 5-6 years, and roses.
Therefore, it is advisable to build a frame under the shelter. Convenient to use greenhouse arcs. But if they are not there, strong branches installed by a hut will do. However, this is a suitable option only if single rose bushes grow in your garden. And when they are planted in a group, then it would be good to build a low canopy over them. Drive or dug in or out along your rose garden on either side (or around the flower bed). Nail the overlap onto them. And then throw lustrasil on top.
Instead of lutrasil, you can also use film. However, this method will force you to come to the site in the so-called winter thaw windows and fold the edge of the shelter so that the plants are ventilated and not fogged up.
If in your region it is cold enough in winter and there are no thaws with wet precipitation, or vice versa - winters are warm and hard frosts are rare, then hilling with dry soil is also suitable. This is the most economical way. Especially if you have taken care to prepare dry land in August-September. And for each bush you will need at least one bucket of earth, or even two. Before sprinkling roses with it, you can mix the earth half with sand or sawdust. For additional protection from precipitation, spruce branches or small dry twigs can be thrown over the mounds. The disadvantage of such a shelter, first of all, is that if it rains in winter and the ground gets wet, and then frosts return again, the twigs may freeze out. Also, in the spring, you will have to work hard to undo your bushes. The lutrasil hideout is much easier to remove. Plus, despite its porosity, precipitation does not penetrate the flowers, rolling down the smooth surface of the non-woven fabric.

Roses In Spring: Removing Shelter, Pruning
In most Russian regions, roses hibernate under cover. In the spring, it is important to remove the covering material on time, otherwise they will suffer not from low temperatures, but from drying out. Let's talk about what needs to be done in early spring in the rose garden
Shelter Roses For The Winter
Garden roses do not survive harsh winters without shelter. In the middle lane, they begin to protect plantations from frost in mid-November. This should not be done in the past. The first November frosts will benefit the shrubs: they give a signal to the plant to stop growing, and also have a hardening effect on the perennial
