In most Russian regions, roses hibernate under cover. In the spring, it is important to remove the covering material on time, otherwise they will suffer not from low temperatures, but from drying out. Let's talk about what needs to be done in the early spring in the rose garden
When to remove shelter from roses
With the onset of the thaw, the rest period for the rose bushes ends. They move into the activity stage. Many have noticed that the ground has not yet moved away from the frost, and the buds are swelling. Don't miss the moment - it means it's time to shoot your cover.
In the middle lane, roses need to be opened in April. If the spring is early, then it is possible to do this at the end of March. Correction of actions is carried out according to weather characteristics. Each individual chooses the specific date of disclosure. For flower growers, this is always a difficult task: you cannot rush and miss the deadline too - you can ruin the bush.
In winter, under the influence of frost, the immunity of plants becomes weaker. Early removal of cover is dangerous for weakened shoots. They can dry out, get sunburn, die from night frosts. It is necessary to monitor temperature fluctuations and remove the shelter only when the ground is completely thawed.
How to properly remove shelter from roses
Many people go to the dacha for one day and cannot complete the event correctly. But knowing the rules, you can adhere to them at least partially. I propose to get acquainted with the sequence of work.
1. Snow melting brings a lot of water. If your rose garden is located in areas where melt water accumulates, make branch grooves. This will eliminate the possibility of waterlogging.
2. With the onset of stable heat, we proceed to airing. To do this, during the day, at the peak of positive temperatures, we raise the covering material from the south side, it is enough for 2-3 hours. This will help the moisture evaporate faster. If possible, make a hole on top for ventilation.
3. When the night mode does not fall below -5, the cover can be removed completely. These temperatures are not critical and are easily tolerated by roses. If the bush is under the spruce branches, you can leave it, since it is perfectly air-permeable and there is no diaper rash under it.
4. On wet soils, loosen during the day. This will help the water evaporate faster and warm the soil.
5. The bush adapts and regenerates faster if you feed it after removing the shelter. You can use mineral complexes (2 tablespoons + a bucket of water).
6. The bright sun is dangerous for the bark. Shading during the day will help prevent burns. Place a sheet of plywood / cardboard or throw in non-woven fabric.
7. Returning cold is dangerous. If more than -8 is expected, cover with lutrasil or any breathable material.
Spring pruning
You need to cut roses when the buds swell, it is important to be in time before the shoots appear. The period of spring pruning of the rose garden runs from mid-April to mid-May. This event helps to give the desired shape to the bush, to achieve lush flowering.
Spring pruning of roses is often called sanitary, as you remove dried, injured branches from the plant and cut back to living / green tissue. On the rose bush, weak, abnormally growing, frozen shoots, shoots near the bush are removed. This method is used on park and curb roses. Some species are cropped differently.
Hybrid tea roses in spring
This group of roses is characterized by the growth activity of the current year, it is they who form the buds, therefore, the old branches are needed only for the production of buds / shoots, which will form a bush and give flowering.
A hybrid tea rose is pruned like this: on an adult plant, all young shoots are shortened to a height of 20-30 cm. Branches over two years old can be completely cut out. Each left should have 5-6 buds. When planting a young bush, it is also shortened, leaving a height of 15 cm, there should be 2-4 buds.
Floribunda roses in spring
Compared to park roses, floribunda are not cut drastically. Young shoots of two or three years are left, shortening by half, annual ones - by one third.
Ground cover roses in spring
It is not necessary to form ground cover roses. After the snow melts, they thin out, dried lashes are removed. If you do not need a high volume, stop the vertically growing ones. All well-wintered shoots with green bark are left. To support bud formation, it is recommended to rejuvenate the bush every 5 years - a strong pruning is done for 2-4 buds.

Shelter Roses For The Winter
Garden roses do not survive harsh winters without shelter. In the middle lane, they begin to protect plantations from frost in mid-November. This should not be done in the past. The first November frosts will benefit the shrubs: they give a signal to the plant to stop growing, and also have a hardening effect on the perennial
