Garlic yellowing in spring

Most often, a similar phenomenon occurs in the middle zone of a country with a temperate climate. In June, the risk of yellowing of garlic is already somewhat reduced. Such a defect requires special attention from summer residents. Any part of the garlic can turn yellow. If such a color is present only on the leaves, it is, of course, worth worrying, but it is not so difficult to correct the situation. A more serious situation arises when the leaves are curled, begin to dry out or change shape.

The formation of rot or stains also indicates the presence of diseases or pests in the plant. At the very first symptoms described above, you need to move on to methods of protecting the garlic culture. It is necessary to immediately process the beds with specialized means, and it is better to remove too damaged plants altogether so that the lesion does not spread to other plants.

Rapid yellowing of winter garlic

The reason for the yellowing of garlic is often too early planting of the crop. Winter garlic in the middle lane should be planted around the beginning of October, then, before the first frost begins, the cloves will have time to take root, but it will begin to grow. If you plant a garlic culture even earlier, then in addition to strengthening the roots, leaves will also appear, which means that the plant will overwinter in this form. Green leaves cannot survive in winter as well as in warm weather. Frost and cold are unfavorable conditions for them, because at this time there is usually no light, the air temperature is always below zero, which means that the risk of damage to the plant is very high. As a result, when the garlic itself begins to grow, you can see yellowed leaves. Of course, the garlic will still appear in its proper form, but the amount of the crop will decrease several times.

In order to avoid the appearance of yellowness on garlic after the winter experienced, it is necessary to correctly observe all planting dates for a specific climate and local conditions. However, even in a situation where the garlic was not planted at the time allotted for this, and the feathers became yellowish closer to spring, you can try to fix the problem with proper care - regular fertilization and timely watering. This will help the plant to regain its strength and vitality after a certain period.

What if the leaves or tips of the garlic grow yellow?

Another reason for yellowed leaves of a garlic culture can be an unnecessarily shallow planting of plants. If the cloves are not placed very deep in the fall, then over the winter they will be constantly exposed to freezing and damage due to this factor. Then, for the same reason, in the spring season, the tips of the leaves will turn yellow, and sometimes the leaves themselves begin to grow already yellowish.

But this situation can be avoided very easily. To do this, before planting, you need to monitor the size and depth of the pits. The optimal amount from the cervical region of the clove to the surface of the earth is four to six centimeters. For prevention, you can also carry out mulching of the soil in the autumn season with the help of humus. Its layer should also be from 4 to 6 centimeters. If you cannot avoid freezing and yellowing of the garlic plant, then you need to try to start actively caring for the beds. Then the plants can eventually recover.
