Hairy sunflower is one of the plants of the family called cistus plants, in Latin the name of this plant will sound like this: Helianthenum hirsutum (Thuill.) Merat. As for the name of the hairy sunflower family itself, in Latin it will be like this: Cistaceae Juss.

Description of the hairy sunflower

The hairy sunflower is a perennial herb, the height of which will fluctuate between fifteen and forty centimeters. Such a plant will be endowed with stiff stems at the bottom, which will be branched, they can be both open and raised, and they are also covered with dense pressed hairs, oval or elliptical in shape. In addition, they will be covered with short hairs. Also, the stems of the hairy sunflower are endowed with opposite leaves, the length of which will be about three centimeters, and the width will not even reach one centimeter. The flowers of this plant are painted in bright yellow tones and are collected in a rare brush-curl, there are about four to fifteen such flowers in total, they are quite large in size, they will be about two centimeters in diameter. The flowers of the hairy sunflower are endowed with five rounded petals and five sepals. The fruit of this plant is a hairy, oval-spherical box in shape. The seeds of the hairy sunflower are colored in dark brown tones, their length is about one to two millimeters, such seeds are covered with cells.

The flowering of this plant occurs in the period from the second half of May to the month of June. Under natural conditions, the hairy sunflower is found in the Crimea, the Caucasus, Belarus, Ukraine, the middle and southern parts of the European part of Russia. For growth, this plant prefers hills, indigenous river banks, light pine forests, pine forest edges, dry and floodplain meadows. It should be noted that harvesting this plant is permissible only in limited quantities, due to the need to protect it.

It is noteworthy that the name of this genus was derived from the Greek words, which in translation mean the sun and the flower. Silky flowers will, as it were, meet the sunrise and for this reason they turn after the sun, but by noon such flowers will crumble. However, despite such a short life of the flower, intensive formation of new flowers of the hairy sunflower will occur. Outwardly, such flowers will turn out to be very similar to rosehip flowers.

As for the propagation of this plant, cuttings are considered its main method. To do this, you need to take pieces of hairy sunflower stems about six to eight centimeters long in the month of June. It is necessary to root such elements in the greenhouse, while excessive waterlogging is extremely undesirable. Also, hairy sunflower can be propagated by means of shoots, which will be sprinkled in the nodes in the spring, and by the end of the summer period, roots will already form and they can be separated. Gardeners recommend using just such methods of reproduction of this plant, because the hairy sunflower often requires renewal.

Description of the medicinal properties of the hairy sunflower

The hairy sunflower is endowed with very valuable healing properties, while the presence of such medicinal properties should be explained by the content of the glycoside heliantemide and tannins in this plant.

An aqueous broth, prepared on the basis of the herb of the hairy sunflower, is indicated for use in various diseases that have been caused by lifting weights.
