The red-horned shrimp belongs to the genus of ferns, it is a perennial plant. It can be used as a ground cover. One of the features of this fern is the leaves that change color during life: young leaves are bronze in color, but gradually change to light green
We continue the conversation about ferns. The green mass of ferns under the trees looks great, but sometimes you want to dilute the greens with other flowers. In this case, the red-horned duckweed will come to the rescue. Its young leaves are copper-colored, and look as if they are covered with a slight coating of rust. They will perfectly fit into any composition and will decorate the fern thickets. By the way, krasnosorusovy shieldworm will look great in an alpine slide.
The fern grows very slowly, while its height is rarely higher than 60 centimeters, mainly its height ranges from 45 to 60 centimeters. The plant does not bloom, but the decorative color of the leaves completely replaces the beauty of the flowers.
Site selection
The red-breasted duckweed, like most other ferns, does not like the sun and prefers areas in the shade. Accordingly, the best place for planting it will be a garden, where there is a lot of shade under the trees and the sun practically does not illuminate the ground. In addition, for good growth and beautiful leaf color, the fern needs very well-moistened soil, which means that it needs to be planted where you can easily water it.
Site preparation
The bushworm is very fond of well-fertilized, moist soil. Therefore, before planting, during digging or loosening, we add peat and compost to the soil. You can mix them in one-to-one proportions, scatter them over the soil surface in the selected area and then thoroughly loosen the soil, mixing with peat and compost.
Landing
Fern planting is carried out after dividing the bush, that is, at the end of summer. If you plant with spores or seedlings purchased in special stores, then planting should be carried out when the soil is completely warmed up and there is no threat of frost left, since the red-horned shrimp does not tolerate the cold and dies. Accordingly, it should be planted in the ground not earlier than the end of May or the beginning of June.
After planting, the soil can be slightly mulched with sawdust so that the moisture does not evaporate and remains in the soil longer.
Care
Like many other species of various ferns, the fern will not require special care from you. The main thing is to keep the soil moist all the time. And do not forget to periodically feed the plant with various special fertilizers. Then the fern will be able to delight you with lush growth and beautiful color of the leaves.
Reproduction
This type of fern reproduces by spores, seedlings or dividing the bush. It is best to divide the bush at the end of summer or at the very beginning of autumn, when it is still warm. Important: after dividing the bush, you must carefully monitor the soil moisture in the area with ferns.
Wintering
The red-horned duckweed very poorly tolerates low temperatures, so it must be covered for the winter with any covering material: spruce branches, dry leaves, non-woven material.
Using fern to decorate the site
This fern, due to the special color of its leaves, will be able to decorate any area. Single ferns are combined with various climbing ones and decorate alpine slides with them.
Under the trees, you can create a multi-colored fern garden made up of a variety of fern species. Only in this case, be sure to take into account the individual characteristics and height of the leaves of various types of ferns. For example, the rhizome of the common bracken needs to be fenced with a border in order to avoid its growth, since it can creep over the entire area and clog the rest of the plants.
