Marigolds and marigolds are completely different herbaceous plants. And yet, they have a lot in common. Both plants give inflorescences colored in a sunny orange color, from which the garden remains bright and elegant even in cloudy weather. The aroma of plant flowers is able to drive away annoying insect pests from vegetable beds and flower beds. Plant roots secrete substances that repel nematodes and cleanse the soil from parasitic microscopic fungi
Symbolism of flowers
Both plants have two common names.
Botanical name
marigolds - "Tagetes" (Tagedes), the plant received for its beauty, similar to the beauty of the mythical demigod with that name. The birthplace of Tagedes is exotic Mexico, which gave many new plants to Europe during the time of the conquistadors. In the language of flowers, orange-burgundy velvety inflorescences of tagedes are a symbol of "happiness".
Botanical name
marigold - "Calendula", is associated with the Latin word for the first day of the month. The long flowering period of calendula, lasting all summer, until the onset of cold weather, is somehow (incomprehensible to me) associated with the first day of the month. In the language of flowers, for the firmness and unpretentiousness of the plant, the calendula is awarded with the symbol of "perseverance".
Spicy aroma of marigolds and marigolds
Both plants give off a strong, spicy aroma that not all insects enjoy. The aroma is caused by the essential oils and resins contained in the aerial parts of plants.
A light summer breeze, playing with leaves and flower petals, releases aromatic molecules from captivity. Combining with oxygen, they fill the space with a balsamic scent.
The aroma of marigolds is not liked by prolific whiteflies. By planting marigolds on both sides of the greenhouse entrance, as well as between the vegetables in the greenhouse, you can significantly reduce the risk of attack by these "cute"-looking, but voracious, moths.
The aroma of calendula will protect vegetables from ants and their "milking cows" - aphids, ticks.
Decoctions and infusions
We fight with spider mites, flea beetles and stinking bugs with the help of prepared decoctions and infusions of marigold and calendula. The greater the concentration of the "drug", the more successful the fight. Use infusions when they are ready, without leaving them for storage. Spraying plants is more effective in the evening, since their protective properties lose their strength from the sun.
Marigolds insist in warm water for two days, putting them in a dark room. Finely grated soap is added to the strained infusion.
Calendula flowers are infused for five days. The whole process is similar to making an infusion from marigolds.
The pressed plants will serve as an excellent mulch.
Mosquitoes protection
The smell of these plants also repels mosquitoes. If a desperate mosquito still manages to inflict a wound on your skin, a leaf of calendula will help get rid of the itching caused by fungus-yeast injected with the mosquito's saliva. Rub the bite with a leaf of the marigold, and the unpleasant sensation will disappear.
Phytoncides
Calendula and marigolds also have magical substances called phytoncides in their protective arsenal.
Marigold phytoncides do an excellent job with pathogenic fungi that love to infect the bulbs of gladioli, and calendula phytoncides save strawberries from gray rot.
Soil orderlies - roots and their excretions
The roots of plants also have a protective function. If the soil on the site is clogged with nematodes or microscopic parasitic fungi, then before starting to grow vegetables, you need to sow these flowers.
Having dug up the ground in the fall, you should close the chopped parts of the plants into the soil. Only next spring can you start planting potatoes, tomatoes, onions, strawberries, levkoyev, sweet peas, asters.
