In modern landscape design, ornamental grasses occupy one of the main positions today. This is a fashionable and quite affordable element of landscape design, which has a lot of advantages. The thickets of herbs have an impeccable appearance at any time of the year. But at the same time, it is important to choose the right types of herbs for your site
Part 1. Ornamental grasses - the choice of plants depending on the flowering season
Relaxed beauty
Ornamental grasses for the garden are unpretentious in maintenance and perfectly tolerate the vagaries of the weather. They look great in combination with other plants and flowers. With them, the space in the garden acquires volume, texture and focus, which many flower areas lack. In short, the use of such herbs is definitely of great benefit to the garden, but at the same time you may encounter some difficulties when choosing them.
The garden centers offer a wide range of a wide variety of ornamental grasses, and each type has its own recommendations for use. Some, for example, look good by the water, others in rockeries, others in gravel gardens, etc. Feather grass, fescue, cortaderia, and horse-grass are especially popular among such plants. What are ornamental grasses?
Abundance of choice
Ornamental grasses, or, as they are also called, ornamental grasses, are the most simple and unpretentious plants to grow. For this reason, they can be safely used in particularly problematic areas of the garden. The overwhelming majority of species prefer open spaces filled with sunlight, but there are many herbs that will feel great in partial shade, in areas completely closed from the sun on the site.
Not every grass demonstrates endurance to any conditions, therefore, before planting, it is advisable to consult with a professional: to determine which types of ornamental grasses are suitable for your area, climate, soil, etc. The role and purpose for which you are going to plant herbs in the garden plays: the decor of the site, as a siderat, create a hedge, etc.
From weather and growth
All existing ornamental grasses can be divided into 2 groups - “weather varieties” and grasses of different heights. In the category of "weather" varieties, there are, oddly enough, cold and warm varieties. The second group includes tall and short ornamental grasses. Using such a simple typology, you can greatly simplify the selection process and make it more correct and conscious.
There are so many varieties of grasses that the eyes run straight away: some grasses spread over each other like fountains, others sway proudly in the dais, some are beautifully curved, others are stretched with a string, etc. Obviously, if you are looking for ornamental grasses to add height to your garden, then dwarf plants or short grasses are not worth looking at.
Cold and warm varieties of ornamental grasses
The main types of herbs for the garden are plants for the warm and cold seasons. This division has nothing to do with the classification of ornamental grasses by climatic zone. When we talk about herbs for warm or cold seasons, we mean their flowering season.
Cold season ornamental grasses: Plants begin to grow in early spring as soon as the temperature reaches zero. Some herbs are evergreen. In the warm season, they only need to be pruned a little, and they do not require special care.
Once the ornamental grass has faded, the growth of the leaves slows down. At the same time, they may not lose their attractiveness in the summer, but the color will no longer be so bright. The most popular cold season grasses are Sesleria, blue fescue, blue oats, feather grass, turf grass.
Ornamental grasses of the warm season: the plants begin to wake up gradually in the spring. Slowly they begin to come to life, acquire their characteristic attractive features. Flowering occurs in late summer, but often the herbs remain in bloom until the end of the first autumn month. For the warm season, the following types of ornamental herbs are most often prepared: bearded Gerard, sprawling sporobol, pennisetum, drooping comrade (Indian grass), schizahirium paniculata, Chinese miscanthus, uniola broadleaf, millet.
