Ornamental grasses are very different in appearance from their usual wild counterparts. Perhaps the only function of decorative grass is aesthetic, such plants create beauty on the site, form an ornament. Another task of grasses is to create variety in shape and texture in the garden, to make it richer and more vibrant. Grasses of different heights will allow you to add novelty to the standard set of garden design "bushes-trees-stones"
Part 2. The choice of ornamental grasses by their height
Ornamental grasses are a real find for anyone looking for a way to improve their garden, make it larger and more beautiful. This type of grass has many strengths: independence from the season, resistance to bad weather and winds, excellent tolerance to drought and heavy rains, low level of pest and disease damage. Ornamental grasses look wonderful everywhere - in rockeries, flower beds, in natural gardens, near water bodies, on gravel areas, open space, etc. Plants can be planted either separately or adjacent to flowers and other foliage.
We already know what types of grasses can be planted in the warm season, what plants - in the cold season. Now it's time to tell you what kind of ornamental grasses exist depending on the height criterion.
Tall ornamental grasses
In the autumn-winter period, many people use tall ornamental grasses. So, for the cold season, a plantarium (sword-grass) is perfect - a tall and thin plant with fluffy branches. It has a rather delicate structure that can give even a harsh autumn landscape the necessary charm.
Chinese miscanthus also feels great in the cold. It reaches a length of about 7 meters, has graceful stems and plump feathers. Such a plant will be able to somewhat compensate for the sterility and emptiness of the landscape in cold seasons.
Intermediate ornamental grasses
• Penissetum bristly Rubrum. The plant is tropical, but in our climate, with due attention, it can feel like home. Plant height reaches 5 meters. It has crimson flowers and is studded with thorns, which at some point are replaced by softer seedlings of purple or burgundy color. The leaves of the penissetum are also burgundy.
• Viviparous sheep. It is usually considered as an ornamental grass for the cool season. It reaches a height of 2-3 meters. It is recommended to grow it in an open, sun-drenched space, then the oat will show its mesmerizing blue leaves.
• Uniola (hasmatium) broadleaf. The leguminous seeds of this herb visually resemble oats. The plant belongs to the category of cold ornamental grasses: even after flowering, it is an important decoration of the autumn, dull landscape.
Short ornamental grasses
Of the short plants in this category, it is advisable to pay attention to the muskarevid liriope. It grows no more than one meter in height. Loves water and good soil. It is planted in a partially shaded area. For best results, it is recommended that you feed this herb with organic fertilizers. The plant is very attractive - it is decorated with an interesting pointed flower, the shade of which ranges from white to lavender.
The short ornamental grass Black Mondo has a very unusual appearance. She will definitely attract attention with her original black shade. The grass rises above the ground by only 15-20 cm. It goes well with plants with golden or greenish yellow leaves.
Gray (blue) fescue is another good choice among short grasses. It is very drought-resistant and is able to advantageously complement almost any composition with flowers and grass, both in a flower bed and in a bouquet.
Hakonehloya large (or Japanese golden cane) is an amazing golden herb that is usually grown in the shade. It grows well and fluffs up spectacularly with its pointed long leaves. On average it reaches about 30cm - maximum 90cm in height.
Remember that ornamental grasses need tight control. Some species will spread with surprising aggressiveness through self-seeding. It is necessary to track their self-reproduction and take prompt action.
