More than 20 years ago, in catalogs, I liked the seeds of a herb carnation with unusual foliage, similar to the needles of a blue spruce. The sowing was successful, in the summer the bushes got stronger, noticeably increased in size. Today I want to share my experience of growing a wonderful flower. What is the uniqueness of this culture?
Advantages
Carnation herb is rarely found in public and private flower beds. But in vain! The plant has a set of remarkable properties:
1. Unpretentious care. With minimal labor costs, beautiful specimens are obtained.
2. Excellent wintering without shelter in the Middle Lane. From under the snow, the bushes come out together with last year's greenery with a bluish tint.
3. Quickly recovers from stem buds, in case of accidental cutting of branches. There have been years with warm winters when the soil has not been frozen. An active image of a vole mouse was carried out under the snow. The carnation bushes were cut, almost at the root. In early spring, new leaves grew from the dormant buds. In summer, "trimmed" plants were no different from untouched ones.
4. Can grow on stony, dry soil without problems, with minimal watering during dry periods.
5. At the beginning of June, fragrant, bright inflorescences with a bizarre pattern inside each petal bloom, with a fringed edge. A pleasant, delicate scent spreads far across the entire district. Duration of flowering is 1, 5 months.
6. Decorativeness all season. After the buds are closed, the stems are pruned if there is no need for seed collection. The greens remain a juicy color with a blue bloom until the snow is unchanged.
7. Covers the soil tightly with stems with rosettes of leaves at the ends. Preventing weeds from developing freely.
8. It grows in one place for 5-6 years, without prejudice to the decorative qualities.
9. Reproduces easily. Sometimes, a small amount of self-seeding is found next to adult specimens.
10. Rarely affected by pests and diseases. In my twenty years of practice, when planting in a sunny, well-ventilated place, pathogenic microflora was not noticed.
Every gardener can add a few more items to this list from their own experience.
Landing
Ready bushes are planted for the first year when the threat of returnable spring frosts has passed. Choose open areas with good lighting. The soil is prepared 2 weeks before planting. Fueled with humus, counting on a long stay of plants in one place (5-6 years). You should refrain from applying fresh organic fertilizer. It can lead to the death of young specimens.
They are dug to the depth of the shovel within the arable horizon, removing weeds. On clay soils, sand is added. Water is diverted in lowered areas with the help of drainage, arranged from broken shards of earthenware, brick or expanded clay.
After 30-40 cm, holes are marked. Watered with water or a solution of potassium permanganate. Spread the roots of the seedling, sprinkle with a fertile mixture. Compact the soil by hand. On alpine hills, plants are placed closer to the top so that there is no stagnation of water in the root zone. With a curb planting, they retreat from the edge of the path by 20 cm, taking into account the further growth of the bush.
Seasonal care
The first time after planting, they monitor the moisture content of the soil, preventing it from drying out. After plant rooting, watering is reduced. In dry weather, adult specimens are moderately moistened once every 2 weeks.
They are fed with a complex mineral fertilizer Agricola twice a summer: in early spring, at the beginning of the growing season, during the flowering period. In this case, the inflorescences are brighter shades.
The earth is kept loose. Given the superficial location of the root system, the soil is treated with special care. Mulch with sawdust, peat to cover moisture. Weeds are removed regularly at a young age.
Place in the flower garden
Carnation herbal is an excellent border plant for rabatok, decoration of the edge of paths, alpine slides, rocky gardens. The soil cover properties of the crop allow for dense planting, replacing the classic lawn.
It grows well between tiles, on retaining walls. During the flowering period, it adds bright colors to flower beds.
We will consider breeding methods in the next article.
