The summer of 2018 turned out to be extremely hot and not very rainy in Central Russia. It was marked by a number of interesting phenomena that I accidentally noticed. What do they consist of?
The average air temperature exceeded the norm by +2 - +3 degrees. Stable heat without sudden changes provoked a number of unusual phenomena:
1. Unprecedented breeding of butterflies.
2. Repeated cherry blossoms in July.
3. Long fruiting of currants and gooseberries.
4. Re-flowering of early strawberry varieties.
5. Lack of phytophthora on tomato.
Butterflies
The first thing that caught my eye was a huge number of butterflies. They have become regular guests of my garden. As soon as the sun looked out in the morning and dried the dew, these bright creatures immediately appeared. Each tried to visit as many flowers as possible. Feast on their sweet nectar.
The sky fairies contributed to pollination, so many seeds were set even on phlox. In past years, I have seen isolated cases.
Cherry
While harvesting cherries in July, I noticed a strange phenomenon. Each bush contained both berries and new flowers. The second crop was ripe by the end of summer. He delighted us with delicious, juicy fruits. We collected 2 handfuls of berries from several plants. In the offseason, they seemed especially sweet to us.
Currant
In the yard, October is in full swing, and we have quite edible fruits of white, red currants hanging in long bunches. She began to bear fruit from the end of June and continues to this day. The juice in the fruits became rich, thick, very sweet.
In past years, by mid-August, the berries usually shriveled and fell off the bush. There have been cases of fermentation directly on the plant. This year, this is not the case. That allows us to extend the vitamin collection.
The gooseberry tries to keep up with the currant. Good quality small-fruited berries can still be harvested today. I make compotes out of them for the whole family.
Strawberry
Some early strawberry varieties bloomed again at the end of August. Now they are hung with red poured berries, sweet in taste. Pleased with this phenomenon Zephyr, Big Boy, Darselect. In previous years, only remontant varieties of strawberries and small-fruited strawberries Alexandria bore fruit at this time.
Tomatoes
On my site, tomatoes grow under film shelters and in open ground. As soon as the warm weather came at the end of June, I removed the films, but left the non-woven material. I was afraid of infection with late blight. For 2 weeks, the bushes grew strongly under the cloth and buried themselves in the "roof". Pollination was weak, although the varieties are self-pollinated, designed for greenhouses. The leaves are partially burnt, have become slightly yellowish.
Seeing this picture, I was upset, decided to take a chance. I completely removed the fabric. The bushes were delighted with the "liberation", they waved 0.5 meters higher than the arches, straightened the upper shoots, the first crop appeared. All summer I collected large and medium-sized fruits several buckets at a time. I bought a drug for phytophthora. Before the start of the autumn rains, I wanted to process it, but did not dare. I don't really want to eat products with pesticides, albeit in the residual amount present in the fruits.
Surprisingly, even after the cold snap and precipitation, the tomatoes did not turn black. On the leaves there are signs of phytophthora, but the fruits bypassed this fate. I am still harvesting. For a week now, the last collection has been in the boxes. There are no signs of the disease.
I have never covered open ground tomatoes after planting in the beds. At the beginning of summer, late blight appeared on the fruits. I took them off and threw them into the trash so as not to accumulate disease on the site. Then there was a period of good harvest. At the end of summer, spots from infection began again.
At first I regretted that I had not immediately removed the non-woven material from the tomatoes. Now, comparing with open ground, I came to the conclusion that I did the right thing, preserving the main harvest as much as possible.
