This berry looks unusual and very elegant: not only is it incredibly tasty, but also very beautiful! It can be planted on the site for food, and to decorate this very site. But many gardeners are suspicious of new varieties of strawberries with unusual berries, considering it the result of the work of genetic engineers. But in vain
Where did strawberries with unusual berries come from?
In fact, genetic engineers did not interfere with the natural process, but those who like to cross different varieties did their best. White strawberries appeared not so long ago, just about 10 years ago, as a result of crossing two varieties of strawberries, not even from different countries, but from two completely different continents: Chilean and Virginian. Despite the fact that these varieties in natural conditions are very far from each other, scientists still managed to pollinate them, getting different hybrids, one of which surprised with the unusual color of the fruits, wonderful aroma and interesting taste with pronounced notes of pineapple.
The white color in the fruits appeared due to a violation of the gene responsible for coloring the berries in a red pigment. And this turned out to be very useful for allergy sufferers, because it is known that many people with allergies are categorically prohibited from red fruits, and everyone wants to enjoy delicious berries. Unfortunately, strawberries with white berries are still quite a rare guest in garden shops. Nowadays, the most widespread (if I may say so, knowing about the rarity of this strawberry) are only 4 varieties of strawberries with unusual white fruits, and scientists are working on developing new different varieties.
Common varieties of strawberries with white berries
Currently, in some specialized gardening shops, you can find only 4 varieties of such an unusual berry: White Swede, White Soul, Pineberry and Anablanca. Pineberry and White Soul were bred by Dutch breeders. By the way, they were the first to receive strawberries with such unusual berries. And the name pineberry is firmly attached to all bushes with white fruits, despite the strawberry variety, although there is a variety with the name pineberry. What are the features of white strawberry varieties that distinguish them from each other?
1.
Pineberry got its name from the rich pineapple flavor. By the way, many gardeners have christened this variety in the Russian manner and call it pineapple. The berries are white, medium-sized, but very juicy and aromatic. In ripe berries, the seeds acquire a bright red color, which makes this variety even more beautiful and unusual.
2. Variety
Anablanca not so long ago received by French breeders. The berries, like the pineberry variety, are medium-sized and with a pronounced pineapple aroma.
3. Variety
White soul, like all the previous ones, small-fruited. But it has one remarkable feature that sets it apart from the rest: this variety blooms continuously from spring to autumn and bears fruit just as continuously. Thanks to this feature, about half a kilogram of fragrant and sweet berries can be obtained from one bush per season!
4. And the last grade -
White Swede … It is the only variety with large berries and a strawberry, rather than pineapple, aroma. The size of the berries is the same as that of a regular red strawberry. The pulp is very tender, with a pink tint.
Growing and caring for a gentle princess
In fact, white strawberries, apart from color, aroma and taste, are no different from the rest of garden strawberries. Accordingly, caring for it is exactly the same as for the rest of the strawberries in your area. A small important clarification: if you want to get white berries, then planting the above varieties in an open sunny area is undesirable, since strawberries can acquire a pale pink hue.
It is undesirable to overmoisten the area with strawberries, otherwise the berries, despite their delicious aroma, will be watery with a mild taste
In addition, small-fruited varieties, that is, all but the only large-fruited variety, can be grown in small containers, using them as decoration for the site.
