Strong, healthy tomato seedlings are half the success of a gardener. But after she has grown up, a very crucial moment comes. You need to transplant it with the least stress on the plant and try to help it settle down in a new place. What tricks do experienced gardeners use for this? What can you learn from their experience?
Protect from the bright sun
Each transplant is accompanied by injury to the plants. It is not possible to avoid this, but you can try to provide the plants with peace. In such conditions, they will recover faster. And for this, first of all, it is necessary to protect the seedlings from bright light. This applies to both those plants that are planted in the greenhouse, and those that are intended for open ground. For this purpose, the walls of the greenhouse are covered with thin agrofibre, which will provide shading of the plants. Capital structures can be equipped with blinds, which will allow you to adjust the degree of lighting inside the greenhouse. Also on sale there are special paints designed for application to the outer surface of glass in greenhouses, which, due to a special composition, are easily washed off over time by rains. In order not to waste extra money, such paints can be replaced with a clay solution or whitewashed with chalk.
In the open field, it is also advisable to hide the seedlings under cover for the first time. The most convenient way is the arcs, on which it is easy to throw a spunbond or whitewashed film. Homemade caps will also work. However, the beauty of the first method is that in case of a sharp cold snap under the arcs, the seedlings can be provided with heat by connecting a fan heater. And if each plant has its own "house", then this method is completely inappropriate.
About air humidity and "dry" irrigation
Many people know that tomatoes love infrequent but plentiful watering. When the soil is moist and evaporation occurs, it creates favorable conditions for the development of fungal infections. But the love of the roots for moisture, which delivers nutrients to the plant, is forgotten. It is especially important to remember this moment in the process of moving seedlings to a permanent place of "residence". Therefore, before planting tomatoes in the ground, it is imperative to water the wells well. This should be done slowly so that the water does not splash over the surface layers, but goes into the depths. Thanks to this trick, the gardener will immediately give the roots the desired direction of growth.
But after planting and watering the seedlings, it is recommended to mulch the beds. This technique is also called dry irrigation. This achieves two important goals at once. First, mulch retains moisture in the soil. And secondly, it prevents evaporation and an increase in air humidity around the tomatoes, maintaining a healthy atmosphere for them.
And if the frost hits?
Even in a greenhouse, seedlings are not one hundred percent insured against damage by sudden frosts. How do you protect your pets? First of all, the same arcs that are installed on the beds and covered with spunbond on top will help out.
If you increase the temperature in the greenhouse with a heater is expensive, you can use a more budgetary option. For example, you can adapt hot charcoals in an iron bucket as a "stove". A tobacco stick unused for disinfection of the greenhouse will also help out.
Many gardeners put a barrel of water in the greenhouse for irrigation. In addition to providing a constant supply of water, it also accumulates heat in itself, acting as a battery. And it will also come to the rescue in case of sudden frosts.
When the seedlings were damaged by low temperatures, you can still try to save them. For this, spraying with warm water is used. Of course, watering a tomato over the leaves is not recommended, and the plant does not like high humidity. Therefore, in order to prevent the risk of developing pathogens, plants should be additionally treated with biofungicides.
