A parasite like the whitefly will love your greenhouse. The pest occupies the leaves of tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants. And if you do not fight the insect, it will multiply very quickly and by its presence will destroy the plants. Well, those gardeners who carry out a systemic fight against whitefly manage to harvest crops before the arrival of autumn. Consider what steps you should take if you spot these dangerous little flies within your domain
Whitefly does not come alone
In the fight against whitefly, a systematic approach must be taken. The fact is that together with it, a sooty fungus appears on the plants. And while the insect feeds on plant juices, the products of its vital activity create a favorable environment for the development of fungal disease. Cucumbers and tomatoes suffer from this doubly: the leaves are covered with black bloom, the processes of photosynthesis are disrupted, the leaf apparatus ceases to fulfill its function, turns yellow and dies. Thus, you can be left with no harvest at all.
Therefore, it is important not only to use insecticides to control insects, but also fungicides to heal pets of sooty fungus. And if vegetables are sprayed with insecticides, then fungicides are used for irrigation. By the way, it is better to use bio-preparations instead of chemical ones.
Morning and evening treatments
There is an opinion that biological insecticides are ineffective in the fight against whitefly. However, it must be remembered that only during the summer the insect produces several generations. And the drug has an intestinal contact effect, that is, it is poison only for those individuals who have already started feeding. Therefore, it is necessary to spray the plants regularly so that the newly appeared parasites do not have time to begin their harmful effects and give new offspring. Do not expect to say goodbye to the whitefly after one spraying. But you don't need to be upset either, you need to be patient and adhere to the principle of constancy.
You also need to start spraying wisely. The whitefly is located mainly on the underside of the leaf. Therefore, you need to pick up the leaves and process them from the inside out. It is better to start these works in the morning or evening hours, when the insect is inactive and in no hurry to fly away from the surface of the leaf.
Antiparasitic activities during the day
The peculiarity of the whitefly to flutter from leaf to leaf in the daytime can also be turned to your advantage. To do this, special sticky traps are hung over the plants. Their surface is treated with non-drying glue, so these traps are reusable. They are attached to pegs above the tops of plants or tied with a rope to the ceiling of greenhouses above the affected beds. And then the protective layer is removed from the adhesive surface. Then shake the bushes of tomatoes, eggplants. The insect flies up and falls into the trap.
You can make these traps yourself from cardboard and petroleum jelly. In this case, it is recommended to take white or yellow cardboard. If this is not at hand, the paper is simply dyed. Then a layer of petroleum jelly is applied and this device is used as a trap.
Beneficial insects in the fight against parasites
The common enemy of the whitefly in nature is the lacewing. She destroys the pest at a Stakhanovian pace. But here it should be borne in mind that if such an assistant is seen in the greenhouse, you should not use insecticides, otherwise your assistant will suffer along with the parasite.
Another useful insect and companion in the hard fight against the intractable whitefly is the ladybug familiar to everyone. Having found it not far from home, do not be too lazy to carefully transfer it to the greenhouse. The optimal amount for fighting pests is a couple of dozen bright bugs. This "predator" from the family of bugs will take care of both the whitefly and the ubiquitous aphid.
