Winter is not only slides, sledges, rest. For any gardener-summer resident, winter is also a time to take care of your site, because it is in winter that it snows, then it rains, then it freezes, then everything melts. And if you do not properly take care of the site at this time, then you can be left without trees, lawns, even without a fertile soil layer. After all, snow and rain can be not only friends of the summer resident, but also his worst enemies.
Snow friend: helping the plants
Let's find out in which cases the snow will be our friend, and in which - the worst enemy. So, snow helps gardeners and summer residents - it shelters the plants and warms them from frost in the harsh winter, and in early spring, non-melting snowdrifts will protect young low-growing plants from sunburn. In order for the snowdrifts to warm and protect the plants we need, after a snowfall, extra snow, for example, from paths, roofs, must be transferred to the plants in order to better protect them. In the event that your site is well blown by all the winds, then you need to make sure that the snow is not blown away from the place we need. To do this, we put snow holders specially made from boards (of course, it is better to take care of them in advance, it is not difficult to make snow holders on our own) or we just lay out branches and spruce branches.
Another important function of snow is spring soil moisture. In the spring, with the arrival of the first warmth, the snow begins to melt and the meltwaters saturate the soil well with moisture at the right time - during the period of awakening and active growth of plants.
In addition, the snow will help you to know about the invasion of rodents and hares, which can damage the plants in the garden. Thanks to the footprints left in the snow, it is possible to identify "visitors" in time and protect the plants and the house itself from them (this applies to mice and rats).
And snow has one plus, purely aesthetic: any, even the most unkempt garden, under the snow cover becomes very beautiful, fabulous and mysterious. Well, what is the New Year without snow? After all, it is snow that creates a festive mood, and also allows you to have fun in the country with all the heart, riding down the hill on sledges, cheesecakes and other devices.
Snow enemy: saving the plants
But drifts and a lot of snow are not always good. Only loose and dry snow helps us, without the upper crust. In winter, often after any, even the smallest thaw, the snow is covered with an infusion - a crust of varying thickness. This crust is harmful to plants as it does not allow air to pass through. It means that we must fight with it. Every time the snow is set in ice, we take any convenient equipment: a pitchfork, a rake, and so on, and break the ice crust over lawns, flower beds and perennials.
The next danger is melt water. Yes, they saturate the soil with moisture, but they are dangerous for areas located on the slopes and in the lowlands. On areas located on the slopes: they wash away the fertile layer to the foot, and areas located in the lowland are simply flooded with water, and the plants die from an excess of moisture. In this case, you need to take care of the drainage system and the drainage system so that excess moisture leaves the site as quickly as possible without lingering. Another way to prevent spring flooding of the low-lying area is to remove the snow. But this is not the best way out - you cannot remove snow from neighboring, higher areas, so we make gutters and drainage.
Another danger of snow is that during heavy snowfalls (especially if it is wet snow), it falls in large quantities on tree branches and breaks them. If the tree is columnar, not spreading, then you can protect it by tying the crown with twine or strong rope, but this will not help a spreading tree. There is only one way out - periodically, manually, shake off the snow from the trees.
But, despite all the disadvantages, snow is still a friend of the summer resident, especially if you are well prepared for winter!

Snow Retention And Snow Preservation Methods In The Garden
