Three-lobed viburnum (lat. Viburnum trilobum) - a species of the genus Kalina of the Adoksovye family. Native of North America. It grows mainly in humid forests, along the banks of streams and rivers, as well as in thickets of bushes. In terms of external characteristics, it is similar to the common guelder-rose, however, it has some minor differences.

Characteristics of culture

Three-lobed viburnum is a deciduous shrub up to 4 m high with a loose and broadly rounded crown and branches covered with gray bark. Leaves are light green, broadly ovate, three-lobed, with coarse-toothed lobes, with a truncated or rounded base, glabrous or hairy along the veins, petiolar, covered with glands or thin grooves. It differs from the viburnum ordinary in a lighter color of foliage and earlier leaf fall. In the fall, the foliage turns yellow, red and orange.

The flowers are creamy white, small, short-bell-shaped, equipped with long stamens, collected in loose plate-shaped corymbose inflorescences, reaching 7-10 cm in diameter. Fruits are broadly ellipsoidal or spherical, bright scarlet, up to 1 cm in diameter. Edible fruits, taste like red currants, are suitable for cooking.

Three-lobed viburnum blooms in the first half of June for a week, the fruits ripen in September-October. The culture enters fruiting at 6-7 years after planting, subsequently fruiting is annual and abundant. The considered type of viburnum is winter-hardy and resistant to pests (especially leaf-eating ones).

The subtleties of growing

Three-lobed viburnum is propagated by seeds and cuttings. Seed germination is low - up to 20% maximum. Seeds require a two-stage stratification with sharp temperature changes. Cuttings are most effective; with proper care, up to 100% green cuttings are rooted. Cuttings can be planted both in open ground under a film, and in pots intended for indoor plants.

Soils for growing crops are preferable light, loose, neutral or slightly acidic, well-moistened, drained, with a rich mineral composition. Medium podholy soils are optimal. Shrubs feel defective on heavy, clayey, compacted, dry and poor soils. The location, as for other representatives of the genus, preferably open sunny, a light openwork shade is possible. In the dense shade, the three-lobed viburnum blooms poorly and gives low low-quality fruit yields.

Care is usual: watering during dry periods, annual feeding, pest and disease control, shelter for the winter (applies to regions with cold winters), weeding in the near-trunk zone and, of course, pruning. The three-bladed viburnum tolerates both formative and sanitary pruning without any problems. Shrubs can be shaped to any desired shape. To obtain compact neat bushes, in biennial specimens, all branches are pruned into three nodes. After the regrown shoots reach a length of 30-35 cm, pinching is carried out.

If the formative pruning can be missed, then sanitary is required. This procedure will avoid the invasion of intruders, namely pests. Sanitary pruning involves removing broken, diseased, frostbitten and damaged branches. For pruning, use a pre-disinfected secateurs. The three-bladed viburnum needs thinning pruning, this procedure is carried out in the spring.

Application

Viburnum three-bladed by Russian gardeners is used less often than viburnum ordinary. However, both species have decorative and medicinal properties. The fruits of the viburnum in question have a pleasant refreshing taste, therefore they are ideal for preparing preparations - jams, compotes, jellies, etc. In addition, the fruits are useful for the human body, they contain a large amount of vitamins and other useful substances.

In landscape design, three-bladed viburnum is used in single and group plantings, it looks great in a hedge (due to a loose rounded crown). Moreover, the planting density, the shape of the shrubs and the height of the hedge can be easily adjusted independently by pruning. Three-lobed viburnum can be combined with ornamental shrubs and trees, and with flower crops. The species in question will also find its place in the garden of autumn flowers (automnalia).
