A little about walnuts

The site already has a lot of information about walnuts; how to plant and grow a tree correctly; about the beneficial properties of the nut. But this is such an attractive and cute fruit that I want to talk a little more about it

Miraculous transformation

Walnut belongs to long-lived trees. Some 500 years for him is just an average age, because he can decorate the Earth for up to two thousand years.

Although the tree grows quite quickly in the early years, if favorable conditions are created for it, it is in no hurry to bear fruit, giving a crop at 9-10 years of age. Numerous shoots growing from the stumps of felled trees mature a little faster.

Greenish flowers, appearing simultaneously with sticky young leaves, are almost invisible in the greenery of the lush crown, and therefore people far from botanical preferences can safely blame the walnut for the absence of a flowering period. And at the same time they will get into a mess, since the tree is monoecious, and therefore both male and female flowers are located on it, pollinated by a playful breeze.

Nondescript walnut flowers seem to repeat the fate of the Ugly Duckling from the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, turning after pollination into nutritious pretty nuts, confirming that all fairy tales are written off from life.

Ancient greek legend

I do not like the ancient Greek legends, in which the "merciful" gods, saving young girls from an insidious pursuer, instead of knocking down the knees of a barbarian or unleashing black magic on him, turn poor girls into flowers, berries, fruits … Instead of getting married, give birth to children … poor girls have to while away their lives in silence, being part of the plant.

The Greeks endowed the fruits of the walnut with a similar legend, turning them into a round dance of young girls who rushed to the tree for salvation from danger. After reading such a legend, an impressionable person will not want to taste the nutritious fruits. After all, each fruit is a failed life of one of the ancient beauties.

Moreover, the similarity of the nut nucleolus with the shape of the human brain gives reason to believe that nuts are intelligent creatures. This is how the respected ancient Greek philosopher Plato thought about the amazing fruits, watching how the nuts hide in the dense crown of a tree so as not to meet the hand of the harvest collector.

If you follow this logic, then vegetarians who are very fond of walnuts, which are rich in proteins that replace animal food for them, are very imprudent.

Traveler food

The small size of the nut kernel is combined with a high nutritional value, and therefore, since ancient times, travelers, navigators, nomads, and warriors took them with them. In the company with raisins (dry grapes), nuts replaced them with a full-fledged dinner, which did not require bulky kitchen attributes and large trunks with food.

Nuts are still in demand today by people whose work is associated with great physical exertion, athletes, astronauts (special nut butter), people with a weakened body for a long time, and healthy people, when there is no time to cook hot food, and the body requires support. Or you just want to enjoy delicious nuts that create a unique feeling of softness, pleasant fat content and nutty flavor in your mouth.

Green Fruit Jam

The green pericarp of a ripe nut cracks and is not eaten, although it finds other uses. For example, ground into powder, it can heal wounds.

But unripe fruits, which are invaluable storehouses of useful substances, are used by people for food along with the pericarp. These nuts are used to make just a fabulous jam, which, unfortunately, is not often found in our stores. I had a chance to taste it only once in my life, but the unforgettable taste of jam remained with me forever.
