Gooseberry is one of the most widespread and common berry crops in vegetable gardens. In one summer season, this plant develops good annual shoots. The plant variety, soil structure, moisture indicators and the amount of nutrients play an important role in the yield of the crop
The sizes of gooseberry shoots differ significantly. In some situations, the shoots grow more than two meters in length, while in others they do not even reach one meter. The gooseberry is capable of self-rejuvenation. Aging branches are immediately replaced by new ones. As a result, the yield and the life of the shrub increase.
As long as the gooseberry shoots are formed again every year, you do not need to worry about a good yield. In some places, the culture manages to survive for a large number of years. Gooseberry varieties have different characteristics. Some species form the required number of shoots, while others are too large. In this situation, it is required to destroy unnecessary elements in a timely manner. There are also gooseberry varieties that form too few shoots. In this case, you should protect each sprout near the base of the plant.
The number of shoots required is always ambiguous. Factors such as planting density, variety, shrub height, crown spreading, approximate life span play a role here. The largest group of gooseberry varieties are those derived from the synthesis of American and European gooseberries. Fruits and flowering occur only where the branches grew in the last summer season.
The best yield in such berry crops is observed in the second year of fruiting. These varieties are: Leader, Grushenka, Venets and others. Each year, the growth is weaker, which is why the quality of the crop decreases.
Normal fruiting will occur during the first four years. Over the next years, fruits will form only at the ends of the branches. For this reason, when pruning, you should not leave five-year-old branches and items older than this age.
Pruning a gooseberry garden is important in general. In the case of a gooseberry relation to varieties with fruiting on last year's shoots, new growths should not be eliminated. Here it is important to leave about four or five pieces of annual shoots with a powerful structure, and destroy the old branches in the same amount. Thus, it is possible to create a normal fruiting shrub. Shoots that are too long should not be removed.
Another group of gooseberry varieties are shrubs that bear fruit for six to eight years. This includes: London, Belarusian Sugar, Yarovaya and others. It is necessary to rejuvenate the plants because the berries will be larger on new growths. Glass can settle on old branches. Leaves are also required to be taken care of, because fungi often form on them. But here, too, it is undesirable to leave five-year branches when pruning.
Pruning is not the only factor in reducing fruiting. For gooseberry shrubs, the correct lighting mode is very important. If the bushes are located too close to each other or are in shade from tall trees, then very few berry branches are formed, their number is scarce, and fruiting is low. The fruits themselves acquire a different taste, almost always unpleasant, the dimensions of the berries are also crushed. In too strong shade, the shrub may completely stop entering the flowering phase. Often all this is also accompanied by fungal diseases. In a situation where the affected fruits do not fall to the ground, they can be identified by their changed shape. Of course, you shouldn't eat such berries.
Gooseberry belongs to the category of self-fertile crops. However, some varieties can only set fruit when varieties with larger berries are pollinated. Cross-pollination increases the size of the berries. For this reason, three to five varieties of gooseberry shrubs should be placed in one planting.
In the spring season, gooseberry blossoms begin early, which is why it is exposed to frost in the morning. This is especially noticeable when growing shrubs in the lowlands. In dry winds, fewer ovaries are also formed. The most susceptible to this circumstance are such varieties as Berendey, Krepysh and Red new. You can install special wind protection to avoid negative impact on the fruiting of gooseberries.
