Walnut has long ceased to be exotic in our gardens. Now, on every second piece of land, one or more of these trees are grown. These tips are useful not only for those gardeners who want to try to grow their own walnut tree and provide themselves with the valuable nutritious fruit of this tree for the whole winter. But also good agricultural advice will help those summer residents who have been growing walnut trees for several years to get a richer harvest and prevent diseases of this plant
What is this plant?
The walnut tree is perennial, durable, large-leaved, spreading. The bark of the tree is light gray, the fruits and their rind are known for their healthiness, nutritional value, the content of vegetable protein, and a huge amount of useful enzymes.
This tree is dioecious, because its buds can be both male and female. That is why the tree bears fruit every year, practically "does not rest", is capable of pollinating neighboring trees and plants during flowering.
Walnut loves sunlight, warmth, but it also endures cold weather in winter, is able to quickly recover from injuries on the bark and after previous diseases.
Where to plant walnuts?
The place for planting this tree in the garden must be selected with great care. Since if you do not observe some of the conditions that are necessary for the normal functioning of the walnut tree, then it will not develop as expected, will not give good healthy full-fledged fruits.
The place where the future tree will grow should be free, not cramped for it, ventilated. You need to plant it not in a shady place in the garden, but in the sunniest, that is, where the sun is most often.
You do not need to crowd it among other garden trees, it is better, on the contrary, to plant it separately and away from them. So it will be better strengthened and developed. It happens that gardeners plant walnuts in one, two or more rows in the garden, close to each other. With such a plentiful planting of the nut, its development slows down. The crown of the tree will be rare, the leaves will quickly wither and age, such a nut garden will bear little fruit if it does not stop doing it at all.
There will be good shade from the tree during the development of its foliage. It can be used if you plant it, for example, near a summer cottage, near a summer kitchen. Or near a country house on the sunny side, to once again shade it with foliage in hot weather.
If you are planting two or more trees, keep a distance of 6-7 meters between them. It will be most optimal for the normal development of trees.
Nut content and soil for it
The best soils for excellent fruiting of the tree and its good development are moderate, carbonate loamy, with a low level of groundwater.
Waterlogged soils, dense are not suitable for planting this plant. If you want to plant a tree in acidic soils, you should check the acidity level of the soil in your country house by analyzing it in laboratory conditions. Fertile soil, well fertilized walnut respects. There are special complex fertilizers designed specifically for walnuts. It would be correct to use them to fertilize the soil in which the tree grows.
Siderata can also be used to support nut development. Plant such summer cottage crops as green peas, oats, lupines next to walnuts in spring, and bury their vegetation collected in the fall in the ground - this is an excellent fertilizer for the walnut tree.
Apply any nut fertilizer carefully. He dislikes loosening the soil in which it grows. Especially in the summer. When applying nitrogenous fertilizer, do not do this during the fruiting period and, preferably, in small portions, observing the condition of the tree. On the other hand, fertilizers containing phosphorus and potassium have the most favorable effect on fruiting and the general condition of the nut.
The nut loves moisture, especially in the heat. Do not regret watering for him during the period from spring to late summer. In hot weather, water the tree abundantly two or three times a week. Try to mulch the soil where the tree is growing. Thus, the mulch will protect its roots from drying out. Moreover, if you do not visit the dacha so often and do not have the opportunity to create good watering for the tree.
